I'd echo Rodder's thoughts - Tail and Tackle is a quality combo

Drop him in at FS in a 5-3 defense. The 3-5-3 is common for CDs anyway, using the Mino at middle LB and a Dwarf at free safety behind.tenwit wrote:It's a great combo, but with MA4, how do you get it into position? If you want a tackling CD, Side Step might be a better first double, since you can keep the TZ on your target (and maybe even put one on someone else after a block).
Or build an unassailable weak side (that is, the side the offense will go weak on) with lots of SF, ST4+ and Guard, and put this guy on the strong side (the way they'll have to go).
On MA4 with Tackle, PT kicks DT's butt: I suspect the -1 penalty and anti-Dodge will have a similar psychological impact as the -2 penalty, but without a price for failure. I think both would be overkill, personally, but I might do it anyway on a second double.
Get Stand Firm next. Yes, SS is better, but it's another 10k and if you don't expect a guy either to get blitzed by a potential Juggernaut or to pin down the sideline, SF is a fair substitute for SS. It's the inside LBs and the corners that you want to get SS on, and this guy's not really suited for those roles if he has PT (unless you've got a Block Mino or something similarly unassailable in the other ILB position... then you could stick him at ILB and be confident that you're going to use SS/PT frequently).

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

Hey Craig,
I'm voting for Diving tackle. As it's your first skill up, you've got a high chance of repeating the double on another player. 2 Diving tacklers makes your defence REALLY nasty.
I've played a few games with DT on the dwarves, and it's a BIG game changer.
...MB, CLAW, Prehensile tail are all good too.

Changing my vote to Prehensile Tail. There were some convincing arguments.
Not to mention it can effect several players at once, if you put him on the line against Elves (without a tree) then your opponant may be too scared to try and dodge away with his LOS Lineelves, giving you free reign to beat the snot out of them.
And if they try to dodge away, they'll probably fail one of their dodges, unless they burn a reroll.

I am thinking about some of those anti-dodge skills like the tPrehensile Tail and Diving Tackle, but am starting to think that this may be a bit premature for them.
The thing that I don't like about these skills is that they are conditional on playing a team that is actually going to want to dodge, and even then the dwarf is going to need to be in the right place, and even then he can be blocked off the player(s) who want to dodge.
Too many conditions.
Whereas Claw is a better bet. Just about any team is going to be having players with AV8 or greater and the skill being used is up to me.
Basically what I am saying is that I think that the Claw is going to get more use and be more useful in the early development of the team. I will keep the Tail and DT combo in mind for a future doubles roll.

I think as first advance, Claw is a better choice.
My thinking is that it requires a specialised build to make him great: MB, PO, Dauntless.
These are skills I rarely take on a CD.
But it requires some building, not great if you're two games from retiring the team.
DT & PT are great but can be more easily added to the standard CD skill: Guard as they have instant synergy.
And a more instant effect in a short league.

I played the fiorst game with the team following the Claw being added.Smeborg wrote:CraigTW - Don't forget to let us know how you get on.
Claw may work well, especially in a long league. But I'd love to get feedback from you on its short term effect.
Cheers
The game was against a human team, and the Claw worked a treat. Stunning a few times, knocking out two and killing one. The team went to some lengths to try to get rid of him, so even when he was not actually making the blocks, the psychological factor was significant.
No regrets! Claw is awesome!
For the record one other dwarf skilled up after the game, a regular skill roll earned him Guard.
