Double 1's on a rookie Elf Catcher

Post by one_second_of_insanity »

I am in a little bit of a conundrum with my Pro Elf team, I have had my second Catcher roll doubles (1,1) as his first skill and am really not sure whether or not to forgo the doubles skill or not. I was perhaps thinking guard but I'm not 100% sure.

Blitzer: Dodge
Blitzer: Frenzy
Thrower
5 Line Elves
Catcher: Strip Ball
Catcher: Dump Off
Catcher: ??? double 1's

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Guard is usually a solid choice, but I'd be worried about plugging someone as important as a catcher in the thick of things. Leader might be an okay choice if you weren't already planning on taking it for a thrower (which I doubt), and since they already start with Nerves of Steel, the only doubles skills I can see being of use would be Dump-Off or Thick Skull.

I'd probably go with Thick Skull as I know there are a fair number of coaches who simply choose not to foul targets who have it, but it must be said that it's not really the first thing that comes to mind as being especially useful. Then again, Dump-Off with 4 Agility everywhere might pay off too.

Safe Throw! Nerves + Safe Throw rules!

Just curious Matt, what screams safe throw for you with the doubles?

With Safe Throw, you can throw in any direction! It's not superpowered, but it is fun in conjunction with NOS. And you already have a guy with Dump-Off.

Whoops. I can imagine a slew of it being frustrating, but now I look quite the fool.

Hmm, another Dump Off would get my vote, just because it's sick :)

However, the next skill needs to be Dodge!

I'm just not seeing Safe Throw there, sorry. Dump Off seems like it would be equally useful, and loads more fun!

I'm not sure either one are optimum for team development though... I'd probably go Dodge if it was a short league or the playoffs.

Elf's should die when rolled double 1 ;-)

I would go for guard. Try to get him to the normal skills as fast as possible.

Well I dont think this team is making the playoffs this season with 4 games down and only 1 win (although each loss was a very tight game that relied on luck for the opposing coach to get the winning TD) but I am looking at long term development with the team and they will be playing in following seasons.

My short list on skills is (another) dump off, dodge, guard, pass (turn him into the thrower with an addition 2 squares movement and use my thrower as a down and dirty ball retriever that hangs close to the LoS so sure hands, block, NoS) or wrestle

Longterm, huh?

Since it's a first skill, Guard or Dump Off would be great... Then make sure the second skill is close behind, and get him dodge or block or wrestle! Wrestle combos pretty well with Dump-Off I've found.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think two Dump-Off MA8 NOS players is just wrong. You should do that.

Why so? I've never used dump off and only seen it when I've played DE and not been impressed. What makes this combo so good?

Dump-off on an AG 4 team combined with NoS reduces the chances of your opponent getting the ball of you massively - a guarenteed 2+ throw and a potential 2+ catch and you've still got the ball. Even if your opponent heavily marks all your potential recievers it still means you can cause his/her team a lot of problems.
