Is this practice ethical?

Yes. In fact, I'm going to start doing it.

IMO, perfectly OK.

And not counting cards in blackjack is just retarded. If you want to play a game without understanding the odds - then get hammered before you start playing. Maaan - casinos are so f*cked up.

One time I got kicked out of a WFB league (good riddance, lame game) because I used the Pythagorean Theorem to guess ranges (on an 8' table, eyeballing to the inch sucks: I was counting from targets to the closest table-edge), so one man's fair use is another one's cheating.
Which I had thought of using Pythagorean Theorem! I just never bothered to play with stupid "Guess" range weapons. One of the reasons I did not bother with War Machines. I was told I could measure my control radius at any point and then I was told off for using it to gague other models ranges...

That I would have a problem with. The wargame equivalent would be measuring at the start of the turn because you're not allowed to measure in the shooting phase, and isn't kosher. The passing template is strictly for Pass actions, at the completion of movement. It would be much better to get a hang on the relationship between the template and board, and count squares some other way.

Oh, and I'm in California. So it might be a geo-cultural thing (from where I am, you're halfway to Spain), but it's not a national-culture thing.

I'd refer you to the LRB 5.0+ page 12:

Code: Select all

THROWING
(2nd paragraph)
Next, the coach must measure the range using the range ruler (see page 5 for how to correctly use the range ruler). It is perfectly acceptable to pre-measure the range to several players at any point during the throwing player's move before you declare the target of the pass. Once you have thrown the ball, however, you may not move the player any farther that turn, even if he has spare MA left.
So... I guess I would have a problem with you having a problem with me pre-measuring where to place my thrower. 8)

Emphasis mine. You can only do this during the Pass action itself, not the previous turn or the opponent's turn. If you did this in your Pass action, I'd have no problem with it.

A real stickler would perhaps insist that your passer at least be able to position himself in a square without rolling dice before measuring to/from it: technically, range is measured from the passer, so one might argue that you'd have to be able to occupy a square in order to measure from it.

One of our coaches does that. Me, I don't need no stinkin' template. I've found that the only way for me to get eleven actions into 4 minutes is to do most of my gameplanning on my opponent's turn. Yeah, sometimes I have to plan twice, but even then I only pay for it once.

rarely play to a 4 min turn rule, but it is just common sense to plan your actions during the opponents turn

My league doesn't, I do. They're tired of getting ripped by my Halflings.

Different strokes I guess.
It is easy enough to memorize the edges of the range bands. So the veterans can do it, while the noobs probably won't.
Rather than have anyone memorize anything, I'd just give in and allow it.

It's like having a rule saying you can only check the skill descriptions when actually using said skill.

Cheers

I wouldn't have a problem with it, but they wouldn't find room on my side of the baord, what with all my assorted junk (dice, templates, rosters, rules, etc.).
