I started with Tom's build and it worked pretty well. It hurt to only have 2 catchers at the start but after about 4 or 5 games you should have all your catcher and your blitzers will hopefully have a skill by then.

As for the krox, I like having one. He adds an extra element to the team with 5ST and pre-tail. If you give him stand firm as his first skill he become a nice screener and he only cost 30k more than a blitzer. My final roster drops one blitzer for the krox (3 blitzers plus the krox).

I say, start with the blitzers and build the first 2 as screeners and the 3rd as a killer. The krox only needs 1 skill (stand firm) to fill the screener roll so get him last.

My 2 cents.

Having been through it once, buying 2C, 2B, 7LF, 3RR, Apoth, I think that if I did it again I would skip the blitzers and go 4C, 7LF, 4RR, Apoth, and buy the Krox first. i'd still look to buy blitzers, but not until after the Krox and the 5th RR.

Maybe it's just my experience, but it seems to me that if you don't put the most competitive build on the pitch with this team, it's development will be held back buy lack of gold due to lack of winning and lower chance of winning Fame. That's 20K-30K less per match.build up that win record and that FF and the team will develop faster.

I also think that the key to building a good team is nicely developed LFs. The Catchers will get there on their own. The Blitzers can be tough to skill up as you need to work on it, but they have 2 skills that help them to do their screening job right out of the box.

Try to keep enough gold karound to replace a Catcher if you need to, and otherwise save and replace LF's with blitzers as you earn gold.

I went with this startup-line last time i played slann.
1 krox
3 catchers
1 blitzer
6 linemen
3 rerolls

I love the krox as i can usually tie up 2 players or make a blitz at the kage and make my opponent move into an akward position. The blitzer should get any possible TD's to make him into a takout monster asap. I feel that slann can make people play really cautious and then you need to punish them by having the one pion mblw blitzer. Ofc protect the catchers at all costs... I am 6-0 with this setup, but ofc i have had some luck :)

I think that is one of the main keys to the Slann. For me, the questions of how many Blitzers to take, or whether or not to take the Krox, are really a question of how many Linefrogs do you want to play with (i.e. on the park, rather than just on the roster). That is a subtle question, which perhaps explains the lack of general agreement on Slann rosters (whether starting or final).

Hope that helps.

In tournaments, I go with the 4 catcher/5 RR build. I've also used the 3 catcher/Krox/4 RR.

When I started my team (now in season 3.5), I enjoyed what the blitzers brought to the table - even early on. I was also going into an established league setting and it was full of people that would head-hunt those catchers. I found I could protect 2 much more easily than I could protect 4. They are fantastic pieces - and can skill up fast - but they are oh-so-squishy to start. Knocking even a couple of linefrogs out allows an opponent almost free access to the catchers.

The fewer catcher build is slower going - you may not win many games early on - but I think you may save some money by not replacing a fragile piece.

The blitzers have turned into some of my favorite pieces. Your only hope of being a fast team early on is that diving tackle. I've found wood elves to be some of my trickiest opponents (that, and a chaos team with a 4 AG, SH Warrior - who now has 5 ST. I haven't beat that team yet and it was my only regular season loss last year).

There's no 100% right answer - just different experiences. The above is just how I saw things.
