This is great, thank you all so much! I am taking Wesley's advice and picking up four Blitzers and seven Line Elves. I think that the AV 8 will stand me in good stead.

A Cheerleader and an Assistant Coach are almosr worth another reroll by themselves. Especially true if no one adds any FF to their free 5. Don't overlook their worth.

I know his league pretty well, and I'm about 100% sure that no team is allowed to add to the free 5 fanfactor as part of their league rules. They all start with the 5, then after games are won/lost differences will occur.

i like cheerleaders and asst coaches, but i like apoths better...giving yourself a nearly guaranteed shot at one after the first game is more important imo.

i often buy cheerleaders and coaches later on with leftover $$ tho...

2 RR seem a be too low.
I'd start with 3 RR:

2 Blitzers
9 Lineelves
3 RR
2 FF

That's the roster I started with and did pretty good so far.

A RR costs the same as a Blitzer after the season starts except now you need to save up to buy 2 Blitzers. Wouldn't you think it'd be wiser in this instance to save up to buy a RR?

Thats a bit tough mate... 16 skills in 10 games and no stat increases and only 3 or 4 doubles? Interesting that in all those skills on the blitzers you have not been tempted to take leap anywhere?

As I say I am 5 games in and I looking to take Dodge every time first, then Guard on any double (anyplayer regardless) and then leap. But thats a handy team.

And agree very much with Snew above.... taking 1 cheerleader and 1 coach can make all the difference.

Got to add Kithor, I started with two rr's and as long as you take leader on a runner early, its alright. I made sure the runner got an early skill and I turned down a 10 (+mv or amour) just to ensure I got leader.
It is a 10 game season of course...if it were longer all my skill choices would be different.

I have to mention that I start with a lot of lineelves because they should get the skills first.
In later games the blitzers will be used for scoring and the lineelves act as supporters. So if they have at least 1 or two skills (e.g. dodge or guard) they are a great support for your team.

And with 3 RR I also try to throw a lot of passes to earn SSP where I can.(after 7 games I have 14 additional skills among my players now and I'm sure I won't have developed them with only 2 RR).
Sure leader on a runner is a great skill. But then he will have a very big red cross on his forehead and with AV7 and no skills for defence he won't live long (especially in a bashy league as mine). Therefore I tend to give him dodge and block first.

Our league for once is not very bashy, so tackle and dodge had priority. My Dodge, Strip Ball blitzer is 4 points away from his third skill and he'll pick up Leap.
The team already performs very well now, playing agile bashy they put up a very tough defence (and scoring with any elf kind is easy as pie). I'm not really missing the stat increases.
Biggest problem of the team is the unskilled linemen that keep dying whenever they have scraped a few points together. I try to keep working at it though.
