They're about that effective. Before, they were cheap throw-in inducements. Now, they're priced similarly to other good inducements. But they have the focus of causing damage, so people don't like them being taken against them and fear their potential. The only time I think chainsaws are a real game-winner is when you take one as an anti-blodge tool, and even then, that's generally against the teams that can score quickly and get the chainsaw sent off.

I don't rate Chainsaws particularly highly, because they are unreliable and easy to take out. But Saws, like most Stars, can be particularly effective in the right context. I recall using Max Spleenripper to good effect against a well developed Amazon team. Still lost, though...

Cheers

Fouling. (Best by far).

Cage breaking.
Blocking low AV, high skill players.

If you have a chainsaw on the pitch it gives your opponent something else to worry about. He may blitz him rather that focus on the ball carrier. This is the main advantage of the chainsaw. To me its destructive ability is of only secondary importance.

At Waterbowl this year I took a wizard sacrificing 2 Human subs & a re-roll but he rocked well in 4 /6 games. Most notably he Killed a Bull Centaur, 2 elves, Vampire & Thrall & injured a few too. He helped me slow the oponent a couple of times and stop them scoring and on 2 occasions allowed me to score 2 TD's that were impossible otherwise.

1st Tip....Play psychology game....You need to be really careful when to use him as you can be tempted early on but best results are late in the game where you can get maximum casualties and oponent has 'forgotten' hes still there.

My 2nd Tip...scrap lightening bolt use Fireball every time and aim to get at least 5 targets (5 mighty blow's once in a game can really turn the tables) :smoking:

Wizards are pretty excellent in LRB4 but seem to get shunted to the back of the queue in LRB5. This is not because they are orse but because of the context in which they are taken. You can rarely afford to blow a whole 150k of your own money so wizards will pretty much only be taken as an inducement.... so will only really show up on a weaker team.

Personally I think that the wizard offers excellent value for money - on the right team it should be considered as an extra touchdown. However, usually if you're getting many inducements your team is lacking in players or some other quality so it makes sense to buy a star instead.

Take it if you can afford to take it.
