Discuss Fantasy football-style board games - GW's Blood Bowl, Impact!'s Elfball, Privateer Press' Grind, Heresy's Deathball, etc. THIS IS NOT AN NFL FANTASY FOOTBALL SITE!

Are you sure?
Griff = 7 increases (251+ SPP's). 1 roll of 12, 1 roll of 11, 1 roll of 10 and 4 doubles!
Now my maths may not be up to working out the exact odds, but I know they're pretty astronomical!
I didn't mean I had rolled up a player with the same number of skill rolls, I meant that the Blitzers I have are far more valuable to my team than Griff. I have players that can do the fancy agility stuff, and players that can save a game. I'd rather have many of these, than just the one.....he ain't no good in the Dead & Injured and after the first two seasons we played many years ago, he was the Star he's reputed to be.

So much a Star, he was targetted in every game and was too valuable to my weakly skilled team to loose. Now, he wouldn't have half as much impact.
As soon as a super team is switching from 3rd edition to 4th, teams will be in serious problems. I fear that new teams have to be made, because the cost for strong teams is overpowering. New tactics have had a nice new twist on the game. Because of the appearance fees I personally check which players I want to keep, and which players will be replaced. So because I don't want to pay for certain players, I have to evolve new ones......... and new ones........ and new ones etc etc.
We allow star players in our league, but we pay for them to play (app. fees) and this fact joined to OSPA has made one reaction, coaches buy stars only to play in the last campionship. Nobody can afford more than one of them, and own players gain spp and become Stars too, so at the end you'll need lots of money...
Reason:''
If you love something, let it go. If it doesn’t come back to you, hunt it down and kill it.
Switching a league from the 3rd edit. to 4th edit. will take some work. Teams have to pay for every player above 51 SPP. Considering this, a league with starplayers isn't that bad anymore.
Want to rent Morg for a match?? That will cost you 190.000. Want to buy and use Morg. That will cost you 280.000 the first match (including him actually playing) and 100.000 afterwards. Teams who can afford that,,,,,,, I haven't seen them.
Smokin dragon smily
Ooops, didn't see my first post.
So I wrote it down twice, who cares

We're playing 4th ATM, with Stars but without AF's. However, we're bringing in AF's next season, so now going through our teams and 'self peaking' players, either to avoid AF's altogether or freeze them at the first level. We have a few that are 101+ though.
We were thinking about losing Stars that take up specialist positional slots (e.g. Varag, Griff, Borak etc.) and keeping those that occupy lineman slots. It's gonna affect different races in varying degrees. The Undead losing Count Luthor is gonna have a much bigger impact than the High Elves losing Prince Moron.
And yeah, changing 3rd teams to 4th raises a few issues, you may have to change some skills on a 'like-for-like' basis.

So...at the end, how many of you would bury and forgot star players? and how many enjoy paying and playing with them?
I will keep them, thats the way i'm used to play with and it's working out just fine. SO they will stay.
A 'friend' of mine who plays humans revels in his front line of star players. he's got Luthor, Morg, Zug, and Griff.
My Dark elf team struggles somewhat. Even with Horkons dagger, I cant cope with Morgs & Zugs ST, Luthors AG, and Griffs Speed. It feels hes got a fantastic star for every position while i'm left with an assassin that probably couldnt slice through butter even if his knife WAS hot! (it only takes out AV7 50% of the time...).
I play 3rd Ed BB and have just got back into it fairly recently. Would the 4th Edition rules help limit their abundance of skills, or is there anything else anyone can suggest?
PS, this has nothing ot do with BOTH my Witch elves (49 & 35 SPPs), and my best lineman (27SPPs) being killed against an orc team last week...
The current 4th edition rules use Appearance fees which pretty much guarantees that a team will never have a star player (don't spend too much time looking at these rules as the BBRC will be changing them in a month or two guaranteed).
The new 4th edition rules will probably be a little more flexible for allowing a star player to play here and there, but you'll never see a team with 4 stars in it again. May people like the stars for flavor, so expect whatever rules the BBRC creates to make sure that stars can be used but will be very special guests for special matches.
I always felt that one of the strongest facets of OSPA was that it brought Star Players back into the realms of viability (it may have even been this thread, I haven't read back! ). Stars are overpowered in 3e; but perhaps more telling is the access to them, as you rightly point out. What do High Elves get? Prince Moron. D.Elves? You've said it already.
Humans have access to too many, one of the first things we did in our League(while we were still playing 3e) was ban Luthor from Human teams, from a flavour POV as well as game terms. Can you imagine a WFB Empire army with a Vampire Count in it? Ludicrous.
We decided to bring Stars back to our league to introduce some of the flavour back into our league. One thing we did was make Stars count as double cost towards TR. We also only allow stars to be purchased when a team is created, and through our annual draft (using the Crush rules in the BB Compendium #1).
Our new season starts this week so our draft will be on Thursday, I can't wait!
Well that was the best draft we've ever had, I've never seen so much dirty underhanded backstabbing in my life!
I ended up with Varag Ghoul-Chewer for my Orc team and Grashnak Blackhoof for my Chaos Dwarf team, both at disgustingly bloated prices due to frenzied bidding. I had other coaches lending me money left and right so some of the other guys wouldn't get the players - needless to say I owe lots of teams lots of money
