Starting a fresh orc team

Post by squig87 »

This is my first post on this forum so please be nice. I starting a league soon and I am deleberating over my initial team selection. I know my first opponent is undead, which just so happens to be my bogey team. The leageu will play at least 16 games and I want to get to a good start. The team I've been considereing is:

Ogre
3 Blitzers
3 Black Orc
Thrower
3 Lineorc
FF 6
2RR

I like this team but I have problems with it. I feel it wont develop how I want it to and might suffer if I get a bad start against the undead. I've read the sticky post about starting teams but need a little bit of extra advice. The league has almost an even mix of hitting teams to the others but more hitting teams really.

Thanks for reading

Depends on your league's rules, but after 2003 Rules Review the Orc team may not field Ogres anymore, only Trolls.

I'd drop the Big Guy and go for a roster with high FF and 3RRs from the roster list post. I would not try to tailor my starting team to my first opponent. Just feed a Lineorc to those mummies and play the old smack-down-and-stand-up game while you hunt the ghouls and wights with your Blitzers. IF you really want a Big Guy and are allowed to use an Ogre in your league, i'd add 1 or 2 Gobbos to the roster for the chance of a TTM touchdown.

If you really want a Big Guy for your first game I would go:

troll -------100k
3blitzer--240k
2blackorc-160k
2thrower---140k
3lineman--150k
2rr---------120k
9ff---------90k

Total 1,000,000

The full 9ff will pay for itself after the first couple games in winnings.
I would take an extra thrower over a line man two possible ppl to throw the ball. And since they both have sure hands they can double as catchers. If the throw is missed you have a better chance of picking it up and still trying to make something out of the mistake on your next turn.
I would like to have more RR's but if you want the bigguy something has to go.
If you do want 3rr's to start I would then drop the bigguy and 1ff.
Pick up the extra rr and 1more lineman.

And tim is correct dont make this team up based upon the other coaches team.
Undead will not overpower you he will have his two mummies if you play the line right the 5str will not be a big deal.
And other then the mummies the rest of your team will match up fairly well.

Thanks for the advice. We are allowed ogres for orcs in our league.I'm not intent of having a big in my starting team its just that a fellow orc player is playing such a no brainer team I felt I might lower myself. *Disclaimer* This is not the team I indent to try and create.
The no brainer team is:

Ogre
4 Black orcs
4 Blitzers
1 Thrower
1 Goblin
2 RR
1 FF

Many people have many worries about the team, mainly that it isnt in the spirit of the league. The low FF and the full roster of players is making his first opponents sweat. His tactics are to throw the goblin to get himself ahead and then take it from there with the blitzers.

:o Ogres hey?

I'd start with a pair of gobbos to go along with his reasonable TTM game. You'll be amazed at how effective they can be.

I've just started a fumbbl team with

1 Troll
4 BOBs
1 Blitzer
1 Thrower
4 Gobbos
3 RR
9 FF

BTW I wouldn't start with 2 RR at all. You just need them like mad for blocks, dodges etc.

I will look into the ogre situation I think. The commish havn't downloaded any of the recent rules reveiws, so I might do it for them.

I think my team is decided. A more balenced team with alot of room for development.

3 Black Orc
3 Blitzer
1 Thrower
1 Goblin
3 Lineman
FF 8
RR 3.

Thanks for your replies so far! I'm not the greatest at creating the initial team roster but once I get going I can usually do very well in a league (I won our last one!).

Cheers

Good luck in your league. You probaly are aware of this but anyway. With the big guy gone, your goblin can't be thrown = pretty useless.

ok, i would go:
1 Ogre / 120 K
2 Gobs / 80 K
2 Line / 100 K
1 Thrower / 70 K
4 BOBs / 320 K
1 Blitzer / 80 K
3 RR / 180 K
5 FF

after the apo, get the blitzers in, obviously... they can rake in the exp quite quickly, so they shouldn't be left behind. the BOBs on the other hand, need to be present from the start. at a low TR, the gobs are really good (with dodge), and your ogre should be able to propell them easily into the TD zone ;) try to make them score 2 TDs so they get catch asap, obviously to ensure a better scoring ability. when you don't need to score asap, try to make your lineorcs score, they aren't very good unless they get a skill.
3 RR should allow you to play relatively easily (just don't try stupid things :D) and after 5 matches (most of which you should have won ;) ) your FF should have grown, and you should have 3 blitzers ;)

If the Undead team is TR 100:

3 BOBs
1 Blitzer
2 Throwers
1 Lineorc
4 Gobbos
4 RR
9 FF

Then apoth, BoB 4, Blitzers 2-4, Ogre, Lineorcs

If you really want to start with an Ogre,

1 Ogre
3 BOBs
1 Blitzer
2 Throwers
4 Gobbos
3 RR
7 FF

Try to get

- a high FF (I'd try to have FF 9)
- many RRs (they are expensive)
- 4 BOBs as soon as possible (they develop really slowly, especially if you are unlucky with the MVPs)
- 2 Throwers (one single Thrower will be marked as primary target)

Well 3 games in I've lost a gobbo, bought the apoth a blitzer & a thrower. One defeat, to a Nurgle team, when I went a couple of players down early on and couldn't push through (or pass over the top).

I have a feeling that long term this team could work very very well. The BOBs & Troll as slowly getting their SPPs and those gobbos that do survive into the longer term may actually be worth having around.

I don't know whether I am experienced enough with orcs to try using 4 goblins in the team, although I have played a goblin team for a mini league. I played the game against undead and found that it wasnt that bad after all. I usually cream the guy with my humans but this is my first attempt at an orc team. The final score was 0-0 mostly to do with some bad luck on my part ( I suppose 2 go for its with a re-rells isnt such a sure thing after all!). Just to top things off I rolled consecutive 1's for both my winnings and fan factor rolls. Doh!

I find orcs an intresting challenge and feel that they have big potential in a long league. In a tournament situation I'm not too sure about them, they would probably lose out to the quicker teams, so maybe I wont be taking them to Lenton.

Oh, I don't know about 'Useless'... Maybe not the best choice for a starting team, but a goblin or two definately have their place. Sometimes having a little guy who can dodge into a mass of opponents to grab a loose ball or put a tackle zone on someone can be invaluable.

My favorite use of the little runts is to annoy your opponent enough (like always using the gobbo on foul attempts) to make him waste time and energy on smushing the lil bugger. AND they make great Frenzy bait - especially with the Dodge skill making pushbacks even more likely...

(Like the minotaur in the last game I played - gobbo didn't break his armor in a foul, the bullhead got up and chased the gob halfway across the field, totally abandoning the cage the chaos player was forming... Ganged up on the mino with a black orc, lineman and the gob, took him down, and THEN the gob fouled him out...)

BTW - My goblin's name is "Baitt" :)

I've played 2 games now and found that the gobbos are good in that they can represent a reasonable scoring threat as well as a huge distraction. I've used him to dodge using stunting in the middle of a mele to get the extra assist I needed. My opponents have felt that they should try and injure my goblin as then they can get one up on me. At least they tried, and on 2 occassions a wasted blitz on a goblin resulted in a touchdown to me.

Cheers fellas

I also plan to field an orc team in my local league. I think I'll start with this roster:

1 Troll
4 Bob
2 Blitzer
1 Thrower
2 Line orcs
1 Gobbo
2 RR
9 FF

I'm also considering to downgrade the 2 blitzers to line orcs and grab a third re-roll.
What ya think ?
