I agree Fondu. The cavalier spirit has gone to be replaced by a rigid structure for competition. Still great to play though.

Some of the old minis just look stupid.
They need to be redone. I agree that the newer models look more serious than older models, but they still look cool to me.
I think that despite the newer models the game is still all about having fun. The whole premise of the game is about having fun. That's why it has such a huge following. If you think the newer models aren't fun look at the ogre cheerleader. That model SCREAMS fun!
I just wish their was more support from GW.
I really think that we need a new up-to-date Handbook as well. To me, that would be fun.

hummm I enjoyed bbowl when I started playing, then I learnt that wasn't fun when playing 3rd edition. Now I like it again due random events don't allow to those who are good to be overpowered against those who are not so good.

So many threads about how it used to be fun. Well, it still is for me cos I scrapped so many rules and invented so many more. Everyone has different preferences, I think CDs with hats are fantastic yet I find some people here don't like them. I think most of the balance issues are problems with Open Format so I don't play it but it's the only way to run a league outside of a committed local group. My players think the concept of a BB tournament is abhorrent and makes some of them angry at the thought of it but many others here love it.
I've come to the conclusion that this is what is great about BB. I like particular aspects of it and not others so I simply don't bother with the stuff I can't stand.

That's a really odd attitude. Tournaments (particularly independent ones) are a huge amount of fun and I really enjoy going to them - hence my willingness to travel aboard to do so.

By TBB standards, we're really odd. The concept of tournaments runs totally counter to our informal, local gatherings where we play the opposing coach much more than the players on the pitch. Also, it's the league history and fluff that counts as much as the game. One team can rightfully say they threw the most blocks last season, will they next time? You can't get stuff like that in a tourney as there's no continuity at all.

well, I've had some great tournaments and some lousy ones, and I don't mean my performance...
I think that 90% of the BB coaches out there are great to play against win, lose or draw... great bunch of guys and some fantastic painters too...
10% are not nice to play against for one reason or another... this does not make them bad people, just over-competitive mostly...
unfortunately, BB is a game, and most games have winners and losers... the nature of the beast I guess...
I do think that old 3rd ed was more "fun" in that it was much more random and gory, but I prefer the current rule-set because there are more tactics and more chance to build a team... the old cards were a killer and good riddance to them!
If it's pure unadulterated fun you want, just play using the old rule-set, with cards and Star Players and everything else.. why not, it's your league..

This section of TBB is one I almost never check as I couldn't care less about how to build a power-gaming team. I suspect that might be something along the lines of why this thread was started here and not in General Chat but it's not why I wouldn't go to a tourney and why my players can't stand the thought.
The NFL All-Star game is all well and good but it's the league season that people care about. We play BB as if it was a domestic league with local rivalries, ongoing histories, shifting balance of power over time (draft system) and major fluffery. A tournament just doesn't offer anywhere near the depth that we crave.

If you think that sensible skill choices for developing a particular style of playing or reflecting the better performance of developed teams means building a "power-gaming team" you should start distributing skills to your players in a random manner in order to avoid any useful combinations.
Not my idea of fun, though...
Please try not to see the (BB) world in black-and-white divisions...

I use the term power-gaming as not everyone will be familiar with the phrase min-maxing. Fortunately I can ignore the "what should I give to my 8, 4, 5, 7 Blodge, Leap, Strip, Gamebreaker player to help me win all the time" threads. Conceptually, this is what I don't like about LRB in that it's all about maximising skill use. Personally, I like to battle the opposing coach not a list of stats.
I still couldn't care less about how to build a power-gaming team. It's interesting to see Narkotic being deliberately provocative again despite this exact thread holding:

Deliberately provocative???
Sorry, I don't take that bait.
Calling the "tactics and team development forum" a place where power-gaming teams are being built is quite biased and proves that you really do not check this section of TBB that often as you have confessed yourself. It is rather a place where people ask when they have no idea of how to develop their team or can't decide between alternative skill choices.

That is exactly why I answer and read this section. I like to see the 'never would have thought to try that' stuff that keeps the game from getting repetative.
I have actually stopped using my very well developed PbemBBL Undead team not because I don't think they can win anymore but because I think they have been pushed to the 2 TD game to do it and I am not interested in playing uninteresting styles. I was a truely terrible Dwarf coach for that reason.

IIRC Mad Lord plays a massively customised version of BB - that is so far from the LRB I think Street Bowl is a closer relative. As far as I can tell, he effectively plays a different fantasy american football game.
This I presume is in response to the broken min/maxing powergaming that prevailed under 3rd ed - (I know my group went down a similar path) and because he's rejected official BB - he hasn't seen that most of that abuse has gone thanks to the LRB and instead focuses on the fact he's lost a lot of what he liked.
