Why are starplayers mostly not allowed in leagues?

Post by Pedait »

I've noticed that in most leagues starplyers are not allowed. Why is this? Because they are to powerful, or is there another reason?

They stand in the way of players who can progress and are cheaper. Furthermore, they're unbalancing. Some teams can pick 6 stars and other maybe 1 or 2. If you get rid of the stars, then teams seem to be more balanced and your own players might reach stardom themselves (instead of letting the star take care of everything).

We still use them though, but since they're expensive and money is lacking, they've become less popular.....

What Lucy said .....

Building your own stars is much more satisifying ... or use the LRB rules for freebooting them at a minimum. Allowing Stars permantently on teams is a horrible idea whose time has completely passed.

We are going into semi-finals in our little BB league and nobody has used Star Players yet (we play with BBRR2001, so Stars are only available as freebooters). Anyway, it will be a bit interesting to see how this affects the finals. A team with a good economy can hire a sp and perhaps get a big advantage here. If it doesn't work out good, I will probably cut them out completely before the next tournament.

Due to the fact starplayers cant get spp's, even in a league that allows them, i would only take hitty types, especially sw's and dp'ers.

For me its the only way to get the secret weapons, so my Goblins hire them now and again.
Although they did break the bank and hire Morg in their last outing to show some Elves who 'da boss' is.
I wont be doing that again, it was just for the reaction

One of the resons is not the amount, but the quality, For ex

Varag vs Prince Moraine

Simple as that.

True some sp's are totally pointless.

I, for one, enjoyed the Star Players! I can assure you that with Hthark the Unstoppable in my line-up, it was scary for some teams. We changed the ruling to adopt the official SP rule for the second season of our league though, so no more SP's on a long term basis...

Hthark is one of the few really useful sp's , unlike the blunderbus guy who has ag 2 and does not have sure hands or catch.

Yeh Zharg is bad, however I did use him successfully at a GW tournament a long time ago, I just seemed to be able to make those pick up rolls(re rolled or not.)Only once in 6 games he failed the re roll.
It was kind of a tactic I carried over from my 2nd ed dwarfs with Barik Farblast.Shoot the ball the length of the pitch. :P

Hopefully thats why when we do finally get secret weapon rules. Hopefully they will come with an option to purchase for any player, and likewise at any point in that players carrer. Then if you wanted to get the Blunderbuss for the Chaos dwarves, then maybe that player could have previously picked up a stat skill earlier which may help, like an AG increase or even Sure hands perhaps.

I think Zharg can be of help from time to time.

If you run out of players and your opponent can still filed 11 (all I want to say is hobgoblins :o ), it can be nice to get as many players downfield as you have without protecting the ballcarrier. Then just shoot and hope. At least you won't fumble, which is most important in such situatuations.

And he is basically another dwarf, som you may have seven for that game  .

You can also build some nice tactical surprises around that guy (o.k., you still need plenty of luck, but if you want a faster and more pass-orientated game you WILL have another team, right?).

And finally: he can be great for fun. Nothing can be more annoying than loosing a game because the chaos dwarfs shoting a TD... :D :D :D

I just think zharg should come with sure hands, or ag 3.

Just as a blurb, I think two of the teams that lose out from a lack of star players is Halflings and Goblins. While other teams would normally have to drop other players or costs to make room for the star players they would get, a Halfling team (because of the cheap cost) would easily be able to field 2 Treemen *and* Deeproot Strongbranch, and Goblins wouldn't have too much trouble taking 2 Trolls *and* Ripper Bolgrot.. having 3 Trolls or 3 Treemen on the field could help literally 'level' the playing field. ;)

I guess without them though, they can just load up on extras (re-rolls, apoc, etc.) instead... Which is probably a better result than trading that bit of help for Halflings and Goblins than allowing all the other problems with the Star Players...
