Advice needed on two starting rosters.

just hoping that someone can help me out really as I'm having touch of trouble picking starting line ups for my teams. Basically I'll be playing a league and I'll be using two teams.

The first are the necromantic team which I used in last years league, although i found it really difficult to play. i think I made some serious errors in my starting line up and there fore payed for it dearly later on. My best players was a Zombie with Black and Strip Ball, although I did have a Blodge ghoul as well. Oh and a Wight with dodge as well. Well it was my first season.

The second team I want to use is the Pro Elves for a bit of variety.

So on to the rosters.

Necromancer

After trying to figure out where i went wrong last season (1 FG, 1 WW, 2 G, 2 W rest zombies, FF8, 2 RR) I decided that I needed to get the more expensive position type players first and then fit in with some Wights later on once I'd generated a bit of cash.

2 Flesh Golems - I want these to stand on the LOS and bash things, hopefully a pari will work better than the one I had before.

1 Ghoul I wanted to use this fella to throw the ball to the Werewolves. i'd figured that using the ream re-rolls if he fluffed his pass would help here and with the wolves having catch I figured it'd be easier for me to score, as I had trouble scoring in my previous season.

2 Werewolves - hopefully these guys will be my scoring strike force. i only used one last time and he got mugged badly most games so I though two would be better as they'd be twice the threat. I hope.

1 Wight - To bolster the LOS by backing up the Golems and hopefully will turn him in to a blitzer to get at any threatening opposition players.

6 Zombies - Cannon Fodder on the LOS and in the wide zones. With AV8 they were pretty tough last time and I hope they can stand up to the same amount of punishment as before.

Fan factor 4 and 2 re-rolls.

Pro Elves

I like the models for these guys and remind me of the elf team I had when i was a kid, plus they're different form the other teams in my league.

This goes along the lines of.

2 blitzers - To get through the opposition line and cause a distraction and hopefully catch a pass or two to score.

2 Catchers - To get through the holes left by the blitzers or any spaces in the defence and run in some fast/easy touch downs.

1 Thrower - Avoid getting mangled and get the ball down field to any recieving player whcih makes it through alive.

6 Line Elves - Cannon fodder. hold the other guys up, get in the way, try not to die to often.

Fanfactor 5 and 2 re-rolls.

The other teams in my league are probably going to be chaos, orcs, lizardmen, a couple of human teams, skaven, and a HE team.

Anyway thanks in advance and any advice would be appreciated including specifics on how to use Werewolves, reading here they seem to be viewed a s real threat but mine just kept getting scragged.

Cheers.

I'm presuming that some of the players currently listed as "Throwers" on your Pro Elf team are actually Catchers. I would recommend FF9 if you possibly could for the Pro Elves - they are expensive and break easily so you'll need a good supply of money.

One possibility that springs to my mind would be:
2 blitzers (2*110k = 220k)
9 line-elves (9*60k = 540k)
Apothecary (50k)
2 re-rolls (2*50k = 100k)
9 fan factor (90k)

Since the line-elves have AV7 I really think the apoth and FF9 are completely necessary.

Cheers for that Daz,

I did consider orcs but I like the models of the other two too much. just got to make them effective now. Didn't know you played Blood Bowl though old chap, not enough ferocious charge for you I'd have thought :)

You must be one of them thare men of many hidden talents.

Martynq,

Just out of interes why no thrower or catchers for the elves? Is it purely becuase they get broken easily, is a high fan factor that important?

Grotuk,

cheers I might just do that.

Replace the Ghoul for the 2nd Whight and start with one Werewolf and at least 3 RR(you will need them).

I use Chaos Dwarfs (and Skaven). I have ferocious charging Bull Centaurs 8)

Yes, high FF is incredibly important with an expensive team - you must be able to generate money at a high rate to replace players. I wasn't so sure about no thrower... since he's only 10k more than a line-elf, part of me was tempted to take him.

However, you definitely don't want to start with catchers - they can be added later. Your first goal is to get spps for your line-elves so that they can start to develop. With AG4 (backed up with RRs preferably) they are very good ball-handlers anyway, so you can pass and catch and score with them without too much difficulty. This is why I would avoid the thrower and catchers at first - since they will tend to hoard the spps if I were to have them and I would want to develop my line-elves as quickly as possible.

Martyn

Disclaimer: I've never played with Pro Elves, but with DEs and HEs I go for the 1 or 2 blitzer start and 9 line-elves (though sometimes replace a line-elf with a thrower for HEs, never with DEs).

Max out on RR. They're expensive. Its really hard to win from an 8RR all zombie team. But assuming the league won't last long enough for you to buy all positional players my advise would be to start with Ghouls and ditch the werewolfs. Neither have regenerate and losing a wolf does you much more harm (and makes you wish you'd spent your money more wisely) than losing a ghoul.

I like your starting team the first time for necro. Thats likely what I would go with. If I changed anything it would be two flesh golems instead of Werewolf but only because I know the WW is going to get SPP the instant I buy one and starting with more regenerate is good.

Personally I trust a guy starting with block more then not so i think Wights are good to start with.

Having started the Pro Elf team with Catchers, I can safely say don't make the same mistake as me :-?

This team needs it's Blitzers to be able to stand up to the opposition of defence so start with two of those and add the other positions later. An elf lineman is pretty good at throwing and catching anyway.

9 FF is also a must, with AV7 you're going to need reserves and an apoth asap.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice.

I think i will alter the starting lineup of my Pro Elf team and go for something along the lines of 9 Line Elves and 2 Blitzers, I think from what you've been saying it might be good to start with an apothecary for them.

As for the Necro's I might tinker with them a bit and try and get a higer fan factor.
My plan was to add the second wight as soon as possible in order to give them a bit mroe oomphh.

Hopefully the league will start in about two weeks and it'll last for about three months. There will be some teams thar played in last seasons league which will continue to play again this time but with their best player being retired.

Anyway thanks again for the advice, I'll post the rosters up I want to use considering what you've said.

Daz,

I'm hoping to make it up to sheff a couple of times on a tursday night during the summer. I'm sure you'll be on hand to give me some pointers.

Cheers
