Defensive setup?

Anyone willing to share ideas or suggestions? I'm still playing like a newbie, but most everything else in the game I have a decent grasp on now... still not sure what would make for a good defensive setup, seems I keep lining up to open/tight/deep/forward, etc.

David,
a good defensive set-up depends who you are playing with/against and the relative skill sets of your players. But I have found that the 3-4-4 as shown in issue #2 of house rulez fanzine is one to suit most occasions.
I try and exploit the offenses set-up when I have a fast team and try many different things.
I am sure that there are threads on this subject somewhere here, DW will no where.

your defensive setup varies depending on the team you are up against...
against fast moving teams:
keep your tacklers in a deep position (with the option of backing up the defence in your first turn if that situation arises)
ALWAYS keep a defender deep in your half of the field (not too deep, middle of the half is usually enough)
against slow moving bashing teams:
you need all your men against your opponents bashers, never allow him the opportunity of having a man in the open.

I picked up the following one from a PBEM game against Christer. (Thanks Christer!
) It seemed to work better than any I had been using, so I adopted it:

Here O is an empty square (I tried using dots, but the spacing went crazy), X is a player, and B is a blitzer. You could set the blitzer trio forward one square to give a bit more support for the LoS players against bruiser teams, and the furthest back player deeper against fast moving teams.

If they want the sideline, they can have it. I'm not giving up the middle without a fight. Second turn is usally intersting, especially if you have some high movement guys on the outside ready to attack whatever needs attacking.

This is another variation which I tend to use.. S for players with high strength, C for catchers or any other players you want to keep safe and T for tackle or strip ball players (call them sweepers if you want). X are expendable players like linemen.
Ofcourse, the setup varies depending on your team and the opponent.. But most of my defensive setups are based on this.. Exceptions being where you have 5 players or so to field at which point it's just a matter of trying to keep away from the opponent..
