Help with starting Orc team?

Post by Lilitu45 »

I'm not exactly new to blood bowl but I have been out for a while. I'm wondering about my starting orc team for an upcoming legue. The legue is using the living rule book rules / teams (inc star players). I may however encounter a vampire team.

The team so far:

240,000 for 3 Blitzers @ 80,000 each,
160,000 for 2 Black Orcs @ 80,000 each,
070,000 for 1 Thrower @ 70,000 each,
200,000 for 4 Linemen @ 50,000 each,
080,000 for 2 Goblins @ 40,000 each,

180,000 for 3 Rerolls @ 60,000 each,
070,000 for Fan factor 7
=====
1,000,000 gp.

Ok I'd like some help. I've argued alot about the blitzer / black orc mix b4, my oppinion on this is orcs are not the best strength team of the books and are occasionaly forced onto the agility by a stronger team. Therefor blitzers are better all round players.

One of my main temptations is to try squeeze in a rooky troll for the added 'toss a goblin' play.

Any comments.

I'd swap one BOB for one Blitzer for starters. BOBs develop more slowly. Get an extra one out there early.

If you want to include a Troll, try this:

1 Troll
2 BOBs
1 Blitzer
1 Thrower
5 Linemen
2 Goblins
3 Re-rolls
8 Fan Factor

Leave your Blitzer in the middle of the field as a roaming safety. Don't be afraid to let linemen make plays! You have three re-rolls. Use 'em.

Good luck!

Thanks Acerak.

I'll take that under concideration. It's a good move with the switch, I'll see how it goes. I think I'll leave the troll behind and hope I can pick him up within a game or two.

It's probably good to point out that the legue will probably only runt to an outsite maximum of 12 games.

N E 1 else?

Stupid question mayby, but why buy a troll?? you can have an ogre, and it has better stats, and also doesnt try to get your goblins when you throw them?

For 20K i would have to say get an Orge over the Troll, trolls smell bad too!

I would be tempted to drop the Gobbo's to start and get as many Blitzers and BOB's as you can with the money left. I always find that the Blitzers are the key players in an Orc team, the one's I play against anyway. Gobbo's are so cheap you should be able to pick up a few in 1 to two games as you shouldn't need to worry about replacing injured Orc's. Starting with the Gobbo's could leave you short if they get whipped in the first game.

Anyway, I've never had much luck with Orc's so what do I know :-)

I agree with the Ogre over the Troll. Troll's inevitably cause you turnovers with their incompetence. Ogres are well worth the extra money.

Have you considered Varag as an option? he's a tremendous help in a rookie team.

I'd not take any big guys or goblins. Big Guys are a bit of a liability (can't use TRR's) and goblins go squish too easily.

Normal Orcs are plenty good enough and you can afford a good number of them.

I'd start with something like:

Lineorc x3
Blitzer x3
BOB x3
Thrower x2
RR x3
FFx 9

Buy apoc first, then the 4th blitzer. After that buy the ogre/troll and goblins if you want to develop a TTM team.

i agree there, give up the goblins on a starting team as they do get hurt too easily. i also rate ogres over trolls. if you can squeeze one in the starting line up so much the better. also the blitzers will develop quicker than the BOB's as their agility and movement lends itself towards more TD's.

i have played orcs before and have had a lot of fun with them, as a team they are good all rounders.

As long as you're not playing dwarves in the first game, having a goblin or 2 isn't that much of a liability. In fact they can be very annoying with the dodge/stunty combo in early games. Much more so than an orc lineman.

I'd go for this:

thrower-70k
4 bob - 320k
4 blitzers - 320k
2 gobbos - 80k
2 rr -120k
9 ff - 90k

If you want you could easily switch the gobs and 2ff for line orcs, or split the difference, but as I said gobs certainly add something to beginning orc teams, more so than line orcs.

I've actually had this very team several times, and had good results.

One other thing...you said something about star players being included in your league...did you mean by that that they were regular players, not freeboot only?

If you can have stars on your team permanently, get Varag Ghoul-Chewer on your starting team. He comes with leader, so think of him as a blitzer AND a reroll and he's a very cheap player. :) I think 160k yes? Well a rookie blitzer and a reroll is 140k, so don't you think the ST4 and all the skills is worth an extra 20k? He'll really go a long way towards tipping early games in your favor. Just don't go scoring with him and take spp away from the rest of your team. :)

A few reasons I'll always take a troll over an ogre on an orc team.
1. Trolls come with regen. There's nothing worse than paying 120K for a player who get's niggled 2 games in.
2. Trolls are fun. They are fun to model, fun to paint and fun to look at. They fit the look of an orc team much better than an ogre. I dont want sum `Oomun lookin fing owt der wif my ladz!
3. On the rare occaisions when the troll does make a play it's even funnier!

Aahh, one of those classic "usefulness vs flavor" arguments. Yes a troll "fits" an orc/gob team better than an ogre.

I'd still never take the troll though. :)

To each their own!

Varag. oh yes a fab player. love the minature too one of my personal favorites. as we are (in our league) playing the freeboot only rules a friend is considering using the varag models instead of the blitzer on his squad as they are just so cool.

Orc Team

Post by Nermal »

John. he is considering changing to an orc team considering his record with lizards. :(

by the way he is playing james tomorrow night and is now considering freebooting a skink or 2 to hang around the minataur and occupy him for a bit. as they are freebooters and will cost 20k a piece who cares if they die. :smoking:

he may stick with only one but we will wait and see, i think it is a good startagy :D
