New: Guidelines to Starting Skills choices for all teams

Post by maxlongstreet »

I thought it might be time for another run at this thread, given that most of the guides given for most of the teams are out of date--Compiled before LRB 4. For instance, I play Norse and many folks recommend Piling On for my blitzers, which looks like a bad idea to me. Anyone want to roll out their starting skill choices for LRB4?

Having played very little vault games I'll put my two cents in here. Personally I think the Narcotics Skaven guide still holds up in my opinion.

Skaven
LineRat:
Normal: Block, Kick,
Doubles: Claw, RSC, Leader, Gaurd
Only one really needs kick. On doubles I usually give claw out to the first double, then leader. Then a mixture of all 3.

Thrower:
Normal: Accurate, Safe Throw, Block
Doubles: Strong Arm, Nerves of Steel
I know a lot of people who don't use throwers. I personally do just for the passign skills and the free reroll in Sure Hands.

Storm Vermin:
Normal: Gaurd, Mighty Blow, Tackle, Strip Ball.
Doubles: Dauntless, Claw, RSC
Usually I go with to different styles of SV. One with Gaurd, as the first skill the other with Strip Ball. I never seem to roll doubles on SV so thats usually not an issue. Tackle is good depending on what teams are in your league. And Gaurd is always good.

Gutter Runners: IMHO the best player in BB.
Normal: Block, Side Step, Strip Ball, Catch, pass block, shadowing, Sprint
Doubles: Dauntless, Very Long Legs
Okay, with GRs you have a lot of options. As you can have 4 I usually build 2 as offensive and 2 as defensive.

For the destinct builds for GRs I'd check the archives section and read Narcotics guide. Because that is all I'd basically tell you, because he's right IMO.

ok, for the thrower in a skaven team, id give him block asap. accurate is the logical choice, but when he has block he becomes a more versiatile player, and a lot harder to bring down. :D same for most throwers really. with block they can be able to cause a threat when attacking AND a threat when deep in their own half - especially with the ball. if they can get strip ball then you're looking at a pretty decent player - block the player with the ball, take it and pass it.

its always worked for me

Yeah, I agree. Our league just switched to PBBL 1.09 on saturday so now we're scrambling about trying to make use of the new skills/players. Maybe 1.09 rules should have its own skill thread.

In particular I'm interested in how the Block replacements (Wrestle/Juggernaught) hold up. The thought of a Wrestling team o'doom (Wrestling + Jump up) is one that entertains me.

And we even get to talk about skill progression for Death Rollers/Goblin Secret weapons now. Whee! (though with no-hands and being sent off they'll progress very slowly. )

What do you think? Worth starting a PBBL skill thread?

Though I'm a fairly new player, this is what I see so far for Norse:

linemen:
Normal: Dirty Player, Kick, Tackle
Doubles: Guard

Blitzer:
Normal: Guard, Mighty Blow
Doubles: Stand Firm or Dodge

Thrower:
Normal: Sure Hands, Accurate
Doubles: Strong Arm

Catcher:
Normal: Dodge
Doubles: Nerves of Steel

[Mod hat on]

I'd suggest that if you want to make a list of skills for the teams under Vault rules that yu make a seperate thread in the Playtest forum, else it may confuse people, especially those that don't realise there's both an official and playtest version.

The thread was designed to be an LRB 4 development thread...
