An Orc Skill-Set for Dwarven_Madam

A very similar post to my necro one over in the skills thread, really. My sister is bringing Orcs to Waterbowl Weekender and is looking to avoid collecting her wooden spoon hattrick. She has not played for quite a while, so is looking for inspiration. As an orc novice myself, I am a bit short on ideas. Before the tourney, you have to choose one set of skills to last your team for the whole tournament. The choices are:
a) 4 x skill, 2 x trait
b) 3 x skill, 1 x trait, 1 x MV+1
c) 5 x skill, 1 x AG +1
d) 4 x skill, 1 x ST +1
Not exactly sure of her line-up, but there won't be a troll and she will probably have a goblin in there somewhere.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers

Well, it would seem to me the orcs don't really need a LOT of help to be competitive in a tournament like this. Burning three skills to put Block on three LOS BOBs is tempting, but I think I prefer taking a bunch of skills to enhance the orcs' capabilities:
4 skill, 2 trait option:
Strip Ball on one Blitzer
Tackle on two other Blitzers
Mighty Blow on the fourth Blitzer
Frenzy on a BOB
Strong Arm on a Thrower
Strip Ball obviously to help get the ball, Tackle for dealing with Blodgers, Mighty Blow and Frenzy to help remove players from the pitch. Strong Arm is changeable with other things, I just figured being able to throw the ball further might allow better use of the goblin, and maybe the blitzers can go long for a few, too.

Well, if she hasnt played for some time, perhaps it might be better to go with some easy to use/intuitive skills.
I might put Block skills in the BOBs, and give the extra ST to a Blitzer.
It might help if you knew the team she's thinking about to take.

Hmmm,
Well the female Orc theme continues. Harriet is swaying between Orcs or zons.
Her Orcs roster was as follows
4 Bobs
4 Blizters
4 Line orcs
3 RR
FF 3
+ AG Blitzer as ball handler to cage up and score with the option of ag4 pass required.
Guard on all 4 BOBs to be a pain in the A*%E
Tackle on a Blitzer to deal with gutters wardancers, ghouls etc…..
Sorry to hijack this post. I am scratching my head for the best skill/upgrade combo to give Dwarfs and Zons.
This is Leips post so please answer his Orcish question 1st.
Cheers

I think the Orcs would do well to take a thrower, for the Sure Hands skill if nothing else, though the Pass reroll can't hurt either, especially with a goblin on the roster.
In fact, if there IS a goblin on the roster (but no Troll), what about the +AG option and give it to a blitzer? That would create two capable catchers (counting the goblin as one), while any AG 3 blitzers could still play catch. I would still take a couple Tackle and a Strip Ball as well, besides whatever other skills can be thought up.

Dwarves would be pretty easy, the usual remedy: at least three Guards and a DP, and perhaps a MB. Dwarves are all about taking players off the pitch. The last skill could be something like Accurate for a Runner (not really recommended, but makes for another playing option), Stand Firm for a Troll Slayer (so they can crowdpush to their heart's content).
Obviously, this is assuming the skills+traits option. I don't think the dwarves will really benefit from taking +ST, when Guard is readily available, and +AG doesn't do much either - the only ballhandling tournament dwarves will do is picking it up...

Zons are trickier, and I admit I have zero experience with them, other than to watch others play them and/or complain about them.
I suppose some obvious choices would be balling skills - Sure Hands/Accurate for Throwers, Nerves of Steel for Catchers, Strip Ball/Tackle/MB for Blitzers. I suppose you could put Guard on a liner or two, but you know they wouldn't last very long, so I doubt it's worth it. Better to rely on their Dodge skills to concentrate hitting and punch holes through the opposition.
Definitely, for tournament play, there's no excuse for zons not to start with all of their positionals (I suppose one might leave off a thrower). But taking maximum skills on top of the cheap team RRs can't be all bad...
4 Blitzers 360 (1 w/Strip Ball, 2 with Tackle perhaps)
1 Thrower 70 (1 w/Sure Hands or Accurate or both)
2 Catchers 140 (1 w/Nerves of Steel, maybe both with it)
6 Liners 300
3 RRs 120
1 FF 10

Hmmm Zons, was thinking of just going guard all the way. ....... Guard on 2 lineman and and on all 4 blitzers....
Geoff any suggestions?

With Blitzers, Guard all the way mate. Standard skill for them and makes life very hard for alot of other teams. An AG4 thrower could very handy picking up on a 2+ with 40K TRs and put some catchers in the line up if it is 110. (sorry cant recall, if TR100 then likely to be no catchers and only lino's).
But - putting your fabo painted team aside - for you at this weekend - I reckon Ds is your answer. Or even the CDs. Look at those options for skills again and picture a CD TR110 team....now thats handy.

But onto Leip's question....
Well if it was someone who played many tournies and was "up there challenging" etc then I dare say Orcs could do lots of things. But your post asked something like "what can my sister do to avoid coming last" if I may say without being too afront or too rude.
In that case, I'd say block on some BOBs and def AG on a blitzer as a ball carrier. Oh yes, AG4 Orc Blitzer, come to mama.
If you are up there in the high tables Gobos can be good but the lino's stay on the pitch and maybe more durable. Harriets line up above is very solid and likely to win a few, I would suggest much the same for .....well its not Mrs Leip so its..er...I guess... its LiepSis!!

For 'Zons don't underestimate the value of Stand Firm on a Blitzer.
Gives you the freedom to dodge anywhere with impunity, and not be afraid of the dreaded 2-reroll-2 dices.
Use it now, before they neuter it in the near future

Id go for 3 x skill, 1 x trait, 1 x MV+1
Put the +1MA on the thrower. Block on 2 BOBs. One blitzer with tackle. DOnt know about the trait. Ive been playing PBBL so long I forget what the good traits are. Probably Stand Fim on a blitzer or Frenzy on one of the Block equipt BOBs.

I field an ork team: the Karak Kadrin Killers with a team rating of 155, and going for the 4 skill 2 trait op:
1 blitzer sure hands
1 blitzer dodge (Yes!)
1 blocker Block
1 lineork kick/guard
1 gobbo jump up
1 thrower nerves of steel
otherwise, using +1MV:
1 blitzer +1MV
1 blitzer sure hands
1 blitzer dodge
1 blocker multiple block
1 thrower nerves of steel
using +1ST is scary on a blitzer:
1 blitzer +1ST
1 blitzer sure hands
1 blitzer dodge
1 Blocker Multiple Block
1 thrower accurate
As you can see, i like using dodge on Blitzers: they're harder to block!
