V_UK new league season - LRB 5.0 Norse

Inspired by Traveller's log of his human team.

I thought I would post a few items now and then about my new Norse side...

The are the "Arctic Shagspiders"

they do have a STARS link but until it goes to 5.0 I cannot fill out the roster.

until then

Nos. 1-6 Linemen
No. 8 Thrower
Nos. 10-11 Runners
Nos 12-13 beserkers
No. 16 Snow Troll

I will be definitely facing Necromantic; Undead and Lizardmen, potentially a Vampire side and as the season progresses, Orcs, Chaos Dwarves and maybe High Elves.

so a bash heavy league and little ol' me with AV 7 it should be interesting

I have played my first game against the Necromantic team of Holf003 (aka Rich Roberts). He had already played against the Vamp team and beaten them 2-1. His first werewolf had skilled up and taken block. he is a quality coach (having finished 3rd in Nottingham with Amazons a few years back) so I was immediately concerned...

his team
No. 1 Wight
Nos 3-4 ghouls
Nos. 5-6 Flesh golems
No. 7 werewolf
No. 8 werewolf with Block
nos. 9-12 Zombies

Dice were on my side and I managed to score first with my Thrower. I made it my business to target his ball carriers and I managed to knock out his wight, a ghoul and a werewolf (yes the one with Block).

his recovery rolls were bad and with numbers on my side I managed to cause his Flesh Golem to suffer a 53 result on the injury table from a block by a lineman (with 2 supports), so -1 MA and a miss next game for him... yippee.

My Snow troll was merely a distraction spending his time roaring in midfield.

The second half saw him gain a casualty early on, badly hurting a lineman and then it was a question of the occasional bad dice roll preventing the ball breaking loose and me trying some wierd dodge rolls to pop the ball loose.

it all boiled down to a close match with no clear advantage to either side.

It finished 1-0 to me and 1-1 on casualties

Norse are my first ever Human-esque team so AG3 without Stunty will take some getting used to.

my next match is against dkintheuk (Lizards) but my TV is only 1.03m so no benefit to the rookie Liz team.

I have not played lizards much, and his roster is still fluid, I guess I will just have to play strong defence and hope for a TD or two...

I gave my MVP to the lineman who injured the golem and he took tackle

my winnings were 1 rerolled 1  so only 30k for me after FAME and victory.

thinking about it, what should I take for my first skill here?

am I rushing in with Tackle...

Kick
Wrestle
Dirty Player
Tackle
Sure Hands
Strip Ball

all of the above could be useful.

my lack of human experience is worrying me.

Opinions?

my next opponent is taking Lizards with his starting roster as follow

1 Krox
4 Saurii
6 Skinks
apoth
2 rerolls
1 FF

I think in this case Tackle is the fave way to go as he will have the movement to ignore kick

otherwise Dirty Player to take out the Krox, anyone have a better idea?

yes i agree. tackle here. dirty player's tempting for the fouls here, but tackles going to serve you better i think.

skinks are fast, kick wont be as good in this case. tackle however, is going to stop their re-rolls and take them down on defender stumbles, so the lineman's got a 50:50 chance on taking down a skink. quite good i think.

the suri dont have block either, so you can take them on with linemen evern as you have the advantage of block, and one assist puts the odds of making the block successful in your favor.

also, does he have sure hands? cause if not, his lack of ball handling could be useful.

just watch out for the krok. you have av 7 so it could cause some damage, so id be careful about him, but not ignore him either.

good luck!

Thanks Mlinds - you know how it is, lots of ideas and all you need is a nudge to go with the one you secretly wanted all along.

The Liz player is an exile (playing member of the league via e-mail)

I got the idea from others but league players who cannot always meet up shouldn't be stopped from playing as long as the commish has copies of rosters.

Out of interest Voyagers, where do you play your BB?

Sorry ND, missed your question! Play occurs in Essex, normally round each others houses so it stays quite close. Families are such a tie.....

anyway back on topic, had game 4 after I stopped messing about with Wood Elves and painting up coaching staff etc.

So far
Game 1 - Necro - won 1-0 cas 1-0
Game 2 - Lizards - won 2-0 cas 3-0
Game 3 - Undead - won 3-0 cas 2-3
Game 4 - Vampires - won 2-0 cas 4-1

Team is now 14 strong
7 linemen (1 with tackle, 1 with Normal skill roll)
1 Thrower - Leader
2 Runners (1 Dodge, 1 Tackle)
2 Beserkers (1 Guard, 1 MB)
1 Ulf
1 Snow Troll
only 2 rerolls
FF 5
30k in kitty

Next up is a High Elf team who I will be giving up approx 200k in Inducements to. I am uncertain about the new normall skill roll for the match against the high elves - Safe throw sort of makes Kick with minimal MV a bit pointless. I thought of Sure Hands but am not sure. Any suggestions.

One obvious suggestion would be Tackle as you only have one Tackler atm (I know that it won't be of much use against a low TV HighElf-Team).

Sure Hands ain't a bad choice either, esp. since you only have 2 RR (3 with leader). I've given SH to one of my Lineorcs and never regretted it. Another option could be Kick-off Return - you can cover to whole backfiled with one player and most of the times he'll get a "free" Catch-roll before the ball bounces.

Cheers

I have 2, it is easy to miss the Runner with it.

I think Kick Off Return and Sure Hands are equally as good here, but I may go with the reroll, as you mention I am a bit light on them.

A reroll is next on my purchase list assuming the cash keeps rolling in

The Regional Southend Patented Cat Abusers..... not sure, should they be told or would I be infringing upon their turf?

They may require you to pay a small fine for not using an approved pussy abuser!

Union and all that
