Halflings in LRB 5.0

I'm not seeing any prior discussion of Halfling viability in LRB 5.0. If my math is right, the much heralded Halfling Playbook no longer works, as the starting team suggested there is not possible in 5.0. Has anyone fielded a fling team in the 5.0 environment?

After looking at the roster, it seems like the starting roster should be a 750k team with 12 flings, two trees, 2 RR, FF 3 and then using the 250k inducement (against a TR 100 team) for Deeproot. Also, it looks like the Reroll Deprivation Strategy seems very difficult now, as the Master Chef is a 3d6 4+ success rather than a free 2+ roll and the possibility to buy more ingredients. The 2 RR seems like madness, but I cannot see any other way to get Deeproot in the first match.

The in-game tactics from the Halfling Playbook still seem sound, though.

"Halfling viability" ... there's a contradiction in terms.

I'm still trying to figure out the best strategy ... been playing Halflings in league play to re-learn them.

I definitely still think re-roll denial is the key. ... but as pointed out ... its a lot tougher now than it was before.

my friend jason made a halfling team in the lrb 5.0 league we just kicked off here this weekend.

he actually started the team with 350k in inducements, and took deeproot and the chef. i don't remember the exact roster but it had 12 players, 2 of which were trees. however you do that to come out at 650k, that's what he did.

he did pretty well. caused 7cas in his first game and won the cas award in our 3 game tourney with 11. his record for the tourney was 1-1-1 and all 3 games were close, despite the fact that he forgot to use stunty in his first game. he forgot that allowed him to ignore tz's when doing dodges, which is one of the few things flings have going for them at all...

they can be at least reasonably competitive.

Is this kind of what he took?

2 Treemen - 240K
9 'Flings - 270K
2 Rerolls - 120K
2 FF
350K in the treasury

But it's difficult to RR deny with that list, you can get the Chef, at the cost of FF and AC/CLs.

Still I'm not sure I'd drop a RR or the ability to turbo charge the team with Deeproot. I've been doing something similar with Goblins and the CAS rate for both teams is disgusting. I cleared a Human team off the pitch by turn 12 last game. Still couldn't manage better than a draw... stupid 3+pick up rolls.

9 FF - 90K
250K in the treasury

I'm thinking my league roster would probably look like the above.

Then assuming you've survived your first game and didn't lose any Trees.

1) Spend 50k for the Apothecary. Now you should still be around 250k under the rest of the league. Make sure you play a team 250k over you if you can ... low FF is great in your opponent as well.
2) Next game ... spend 60k for 2 extra Flings to bring your team to 14 (this is actually where I leave it). If you have a challenge league shop around for for a low FF team that is 250,000 higher.
3) Next game ... spend 60k to get 3 Cheerleaders and 3 Asst. Coaches.

Now even though with your 250k in the bank you could buy all of the above after your first game ... if you do that you'll have very little chance of easily finding 250,000 underdog games so pace yourself to your leagues growth rate would be my advice.

Then as you get 120k ... get up to 2 more re-rolls to get to 4 total. And replacing injured Flings as needed.

I like running a 14 man roster for this team. ... Leaves room for Deeproot and now that I've played with him some ... I really like Puggy as well. Re-roll denial is still a focus so try to aim for matches where you are the 350,000 underdog so that you can pick up Deeproot and the Chef. If you opponent is so loaded for re-rolls that it looks like it won't matter ... Bloodweiser Babes and Puggy are definitely inducement considerations.

Hope that helps.
