rat ogre in tourney team

Post by Carloz »

Is a rat ogre worth the (high) prize in a 110 team for a tournament?

Any suggestions for a team with this animal in it?
Thx

Yes it most definately is IF you know how to use it!

My 110 tr skaven roster:

4 Gutter Runners
2 Storm Vermin
1 Rat Ogre
5 Linerats
3 Rerolls
1 Assistant Coach

I personally love the Rat Ogre. Mainly because it adds another dimension to a skaven team. It adds frenzy, which gives you many, many tactical options from chainpushing to crowdpushing and block-positioning yourself. It adds prehensive tail which makes him great for tying up players vs non-"power bash' teams like other skaven, elves, humans,... It has high strength so it can crack open cages.
Downsides are that it's unreliable and vulnerable. Against a lot of teams you need to protect the Rat Ogre, I often keep a linerat near it to prevent opponents from ganging up on it. Don't use him on the line in a scrimmage, it's armour is too low for that and frenzy means he'll mess up your line and get into trouble. Keep away from other big guys and mummies. The best thing about the Rat Ogre is that it has a great blitzing threath. This doesn't mean you should always blitz with it, far from it. Setting up the threath forces your opponent to react to you and allows the more reliable part of your team to do the real work.
Defence vs agile teams is usually hit or miss anyway so you might as well use your rat ogre to the fullest vs these teams. I try to blitz with my rat ogre and frenzy-push the receivers close together (and often even injure them) and then mark them with the tail. This gives the rest of your team the opportunity to double-mark other receivers and go after the ball. If the rat ogre won't blitz, oh well, your opponent will score, you score back and you get another shot at defence. Usually just scoring on defence once is enough.

Hmm, surprising to hear a YES vote in here.

I'm not really a skaven coach myself, but I expected never to see Rat Ogres again now they have become so horribly expensive.

I'll take your word for it though....

My Bulls have the "Thin Skull" trait. After every block they make, roll a D6. On a 1+ they get ko-ed and stay in the ko-box for the rest of the game.

I saw 2 at the Chaos Cup and that was TV 100.

plus big guys are fun. They can wild animals in particular are very hit and miss. If you tear the opposition up you can marvel at the power of your beastie, or just laugh/cry when it stands around and does nothing or triple skulls v some little halfling.

Yes, the RO on the Skaven team is one of the better options as far as Big Guys go. He is a threat, and will do the job if you do what Tuern says.

If you don't play him right though, he becomes an expensive turnover machine.

I find in more important to max-out on the GRs and Storm Vermins, and get 3 RRs. So if it was TV100, I wouldn't go with the RO. At TV110, you get all the above, the RO, and a total of 12 players. That's pretty good, and probably the roster that I'd pick.

Thanks for the quick answer
Suppose the rat ogre is the lucky one who gets a skill or even a double.
What to give?

Block. It's not sexy, but it works.

Alternatively, try juggernaut if you intend to use him for more than just intimidation and distraction.

At TR 100 I wouldn't take one either.

But think of it this way, you can trade the Rat Ogre for 2 linerats and a reroll. I know I'll rarely get much use out of those 2 extra linerats at tr 110 (although the reroll would be handy), if you play it right with Skaven you can limit attrition (Rat Ogre helps with this too) for long enough. So what else is there to spend those 160k on?

double:
*Block -> makes him so much more reliable and harder to push away on half-die blocks.
*Claw -> if you really don't want Block, this skill will likely scare your opponent which is something skaven can take advantage of (and it will allow you to bash some heads in as well)

normal:
*Juggernaut -> makes him more reliable again, at least when blitzing
*Guard -> usefull when the Rat Ogre cracks a cage and the rest of the team comes piling in
* Break Tackle -> once again something to scare your opponent with, personally I don't like it as it makes him even more unreliable but I've see some people make good use of this skill.

You don't NEED one, it all depends on wheter you perform better with or without one.
I won a LRB5 TV110 tourney, and at no time thought i should have taken a RO.

I think that's very well put, I certainly play better with a Rat Ogre.

I honestly can't remember off the top of my head. I think I had 4 GR, and I know I had 2 SV. 1 thrower and enough linemen for 12 players I think.
I'll try and work it out.

[Edit] Got it:
2 Blitzers
4 Runners
1 thrower
5 Linemen
4 RR
0 FF
