How to overcome the normal nasties with ogres...?

Post by Omalley69 »

the post is in general to give an overview on how to handle the ogre team, (mostly minding the stuff not mentioned in the older topic, much like this one)

firstly since the ogre tactica is for LRB 4, (o-11 ogres, and gobos instead of snotlings("snotters"))...

secondly, since they are so cool, model and potential-wise, and are one of the hardest teams to coach...

...and since im pretty nooby with my ogres (no win so far), your input might come at great use...

some bacis i whould like to know, for a starter:

how to beat:

dwarfs in general? all thouse blockers...and tacklers negating snotters dodge skill...norse aswell for the block skill matter

wood elfs, dodging away from me constantly = no body to block, only doing one blitz pr turn isnt that cool for a bashy team

khemri
it seems like bashy vs bashy...!?! any tricks?

Skills

the other ogre tactic topics talk about break tackle over guarb, whould guardb help the most if you stick the boys together 2 n 2, and then have one with break tackle getting the ball with a snotter handoff...?
i cant realy think of that many times break tackle whould have been nice in all the games ive played...guard on the other hand, alot...

Well, in general, the best way to not get sacked by a bunch of ogres is to not ask the barkeep for more beer.

About the only useful tactics I was able to figure out in my short time as an ogre coach (team got mutilated) were:
- spend the first half trying to beat the crap out of the opponent, try to score in the second.
- never underestimate the usefulness of a snotling as a projectile while defending.

Diving tackle on the snotlings will slow down those dodging speed teams... I can't say much more as I haven't used the Ogres. Galak uses the diving tackle thing to great effect though...

That surprises me ... with ST 5 ... you shouldn't need Guard to get your 2 dice blocks.

The biggest problem Ogre teams have is mobility .. the ability to respond to a change in the opponent's offense or defense. Snotling make great roadblocks with Diving Tackle (due to already having Side Step) ... but they cannot blitz effectively.

You need mobile Ogres in order to respond to this ... however ... Ogres are not mobile ... Break Tackle solves this problem.

You haven't won with Ogres yet you said. I'm going to suggest that if you think you need Guard more than Break Tackle ... you are trying to create slugfest too much and need to think more about how to use those ST 5 AV 9 road blocks effectively. You also need to think about using Snotlings to get assists and then using the Ogre to block the guy away from the Snotlings that just lended the assist. My Guard Ogre comes into play in my games probably 2 to 3 times max a game (I have one which I recommend having one Guard/Grab Ogre on an Ogre team). The Break Tackle Ogres will easily use that skill either more than 2 to 3 times OR in much more critical situations (ie stopping a score ... breaking free to throw the ball carrying Snotling downfield to score .... etc.)

i havnt used snotters as assist yet, because if you dont get em down or push back, the snotter is doomed...

hmm the breaktackle thing makes sence...

what is the bonus of having guard/grab on the same ogre? he can assist and awoid getting the situation to swarmed?

If you play Ogres worrying about what happens to the Snotlings if they are not used for assists ... you will definitely have issues winning. Snotlings with their 2+ dodge rolls with a skill re-roll backer were custom designed for setting up 3 dice blocks all over the pitch.

My Grab/Guard Ogre is my middle of the LOS Ogre ... he protects the two Ogres on either side of him and since they both have Multiple Block ... it allows him to move the player he blocks to feed their Multiple Block skill.
