Apoth use in tournaments -- good idea?

Have any of you tried hiring an Apoth in a tournament, using him for BH results instead of SI or Kill results? Does this sound like a good idea as a cheaper, maybe better alternative to an extra man on a team that pays at least 50k for linos or has lots of positionals?
Example: Pro Elves at 100 (at 110 I'd probably rather buy an extra Catcher and use the Apoth money to upgrade to a full slate of positionals or a 3rd re-roll)
2x Blitzer
2x Catcher
1x Thrower
6x Line-Elf
2x Re-Roll
1x Apothecary
The Apo allows me to take more positionals than I'd otherwise feel comfortable going with; the first time one of them goes down, he comes right back next drive. Is this smart, or would it be better to drop the Apo and Thrower for a reserve (who is in no way better than the guy he's replacing, but comes in to replace SI'ed or killed or KO'ed guys)?
Example: Orcs at 110 (I wouldn't do it at 100; a single extra lino isn't much of a decrease in power, and is much more likely to be used).
4x BOB
4x Blitzer
2x Thrower (Air Orkyell, baby!)
1x Lineman
1x Goblin
1x Apoth
3x Re-Roll
In this case, having 12 guys and an Apo means I'm just about never going to be down players. I have a chance to use the Apo to keep a player worth 70k or 80k in play, or to keep the Goblin game going if something unexpected happens. Smart or not? Would I be better off with another Lino, or by upgrading that so-underestimated Thrower to a Troll?

IF I'm reading your post correctly... you mean that in a tournament you never get worse than "BH" from injuries?
As one of our coaches put it: "Bring Nurgle every time! Now your Rotters don't have to worry!!"....

Hi
The only time I buy a Apoth at the outset is with my halflings.
With my other team (orcs and dwarves) I always wait until after the first game to buy one. The reason being is that re-rolls cost double so by waiting I can afford usually an extra reroll. The second game I would then buy my 12th player...depending on situation of course.
If I loose a player or get him injured then I am not loosing too much as that player has not had chance to develop much.

*ahem* you might want to pay attention to the topic title before posting next time...

in LRB4 and before, bringing an apothecary was much less of a problem--you usually got one. Heck, I even got to bringing one with my dwarves (and in a couple of tourneys it helped--used in 5 of 6 games).
In LRB5, it's not such oa no brainer, since the healed player still can't get back onto the field until the next drive. I'd probably still bring one on teams with expesive, fragile players, like Skaven. Teams that are likely to suffer 2-3 casualties a game.
But for the high armor, bashy teams, I'd probalby not bring one at all.

I'd never use an apoth in a reset type tournament. An extra lineman or reroll or even coaches/cheers would be more valuable IMO.

C'mon Fen. Some people have never played in a resurection tournament (me being one of them), but imagine all tournaments to be part of a season or league as they are described in the LRB. Mattgslater did not stipulate which sort he was asking about.

I always just spend my money on the 11 best players I can afford, and hope they make it. No apoth, no bench. Go hard or go home!

Yep, that's also my tournament motto. Go hard or go home.
And remember that if a SI or death was rolled, the Apoth only gives you a 50% change of getting your player back in the reserves. And you spend money on something that may not be useful at all in most games.
Can't think of a scenario where I would buy an Apoth for a resurection tournament.

No, I mean taking an Apoth in a tournament format ("resurrection?") where you still roll on the Cas table but take no long-term results. In this format, I'd only use the Apoth on a BH guy so it automatically puts the guy to the reserves, and just letting SI and Dead results happen (if it were automatic, it would be a no-brainer). The question is: is it often worth it to pay 50k for a 50% shot at a 100% insurance policy for each casualty until it works?

Actually, I am one of the few persons who used an apo in a LRB 5 resurrection tournament. Here's my report from the old topic.
Meradanis wrote:I did some field studies reagarding the apo during a 1.100k tournament during the
Botzliga Bembel Bowl 2. Although my overall performance has been pretty embarrassing (I totally blame those Bembel Bowl dices...

), the apo has been working well. I played (pro) elves, by the way.
Game 1: Apo for a badly hurt lino (60k) during half one, automatic success.
Game 2: I did some gambling, my Blitzer (110k+skill) had been injured during half one. I used the Apo to heal him (50/50).
Game 3: Apo for a badly hurt lino (60k+skill) during half one, automatic success.
Game 4: Same situation on the same player as in Game 2, and luckily the same outcome.
Game 5: Didn't need the apo, since my opponent didn't do a single casuality.
I've healed 320k worth of players (3/4 had one extra skill), but I've been quite lucky with those 50/50 rolls.

At 1.1M I could see the argument, maybe. At the straight TV100 level, the $$ is just too tight to justify it.
Even at 1.1M, I'm sure I'd usually find something better to spend the money on, for most races.

I'd consider one for expensive teams (though usually by the time you've bought the players you want/need, you can't afford the apo). Fr cheap team I'd probably go without.

That's just it...the expensive teams can't afford one, because they have a roster to fill; the cheap teams don't need one, because they'd generally be better off with a bench player.
