when to retire a young, niggled player?
I've got a Dark Elf lineman on my team right now who just damaged his back last match. He's got 9SPP, and his one skill is Dirty Player. My team has 13 other players, so I don't necessarily need this guy for the meat (although an extra guy can help). The Big Deal is if I cut this player, it will net me an extra handicap roll in my next two matches, which will be against tough opponents. So the big question. Do I keep this guy around, or turn him into an assistant coach? At what point do you decide to retire a player?

Since I happen to know your next two matches are against well developed Chaos Dwarf and Dwarf teams, I have to recommend you keep the niggled DP.
Here's my reasoning:
Your opponents are bashy. Putting this guy on the LoS increases the chances of the rest of your elves surviving unscathed.
Having a DP of your own can help neutralize how foul happy your opponents are, minimalizing your damage.
Assume the worst, and be surprised when things turn out better: If in either of your next two games you take a high number of casualties, you'll be darned glad to have an extra warm body to fill in while the MNGs roll past.
I agree with Anthony_TBBF that the handicap table has no teeth (at least cannot be relied on to). This decreases my valuation of a handicap roll or two.
I also agree with Zombie, that thinking long term first for your team is the pragmatic way to go. But I disagree with his conclusion. The niggled elf in question (in our league at least, is this a house rule?) can't get the MVP when he's MNG, so you only risk the 1/14 chance for one of the two games. I also think that using this elf as line fodder, so that he's more likely to suffer permanent damage rather than some other elf is a Good Thing long term. I'd rather have one really beat up elf taking it for the team than several elves all battered up.

P.S. Good luck this week against the Gummi Bears! Soften 'em up for me, eh? [I play them the week after with my namby Wood Elves.]

Yah, in the end I decided to keep the player. That way, I'll have at least one player that can show up for the game after this one. The bummer is we have a TR difference of exactly 25 right now, all I need is 1 to get another roll, but my effective TR is lower, since the MNG elf counts toward my TR even though he can't play this game. Oh well, I'll just have to beat him with guile.
