High Elf (1,280,000): Buy a Re-Roll or a Catcher?

Hi there!

In a thread before, i was asking for advices for my team.
http://www.talkbloodbowl.com/phpBB2/vie ... hp?t=23243
Now i have another problem: I gained a few skills but rolled 3 times AG+ and couldn't deny the characterisics increase. So i am in a total lack of the skill "dodge". That is the cause, why i am loosing re-rolls in my halfs like hell.

My remaining 7 opponents are:
5. woodelves
6. lizardmen
7. necromantic
8. human
9. vampire
10. nurgle rotters
11. dwarf

And here's my team:

I have some money to spend now, and would rather prefer to buy a Re-Roll than a 3rd catcher. What would you do in my situation?

Catcher would be more useful IMHO

Since you already have 12 players, I would buy the Reroll. If you would have only 11, I'd recommend another player before the third Reroll.

Ah. I'd make the cut-off 13 players with 3 Catchers before the third re-roll gives you more upside. Rememeber that two Catchers are WAAAY better than one, so a third one gives you a great bench. Then get a re-roll next and you're pretty much done except for replacing casualties and maybe hiring a fourteenth player.

Re-roll. 2 is never enough for elves, and 12 players is ok for now.

You guys failed to notice the thrower is MNG which means only 11 players for the next game. I would take a player. But I might go with another thrower instead of a passer. My HE players have short lives. I had a 30 SPP thrower, a 37 SPP Blitzer, and a 31SPP catcher in less than 10 games. Take the player. But why the thrower. Well, the obvious reason is that his current one is MNG and has a Niggling. But the other reason is that he has 3 players with AG5. So he has 4 players that can really act as catchers. So this new Thrower becomes the regular thrower with the Niggled Thrower riding the bench if need be.

You need players with HE. I went from 14 players to needing journeymen in just 2 games and THAT was with me winning both games.

The Thrower has the distinct advantage of being an available player on the roster, after all...

I would go catcher personally. A third re-roll is important, but you need catchers (and skilled up ones at that) to be a competitive High Elf team, and right now the team is too vulnerable to a serious injury which would decimate it.

Oh, and I usually go Dodge before Block, and turn down most AG increases on Elf teams. AG 4 is good enough almost all the time, and unless the league is dwarf heavy, Dodge is more important than block.

I would allow AG 5 on a positional, but I just don't like it on my linemen.

I agree with jural. Any of his +AG players are better at passing then rookie thrower (except that they dont have pass skill). I would buy a catcher and play pass/hand off/TD game. Catcher with +AG can perform thrower role while other two catchers run for TD zone. Linemans with +AG can play connecting players in middle of field.

True, you can use one of those AG5 lineman as a temporary thrower. But IMO, what makes the HEs so great is the the Safe Throw ability on the thrower especially if your league have other elf teams. The security of knowing that you won't be intercepted opens you up to being able to make any pass you want without having to move around to avoid interception lanes.

Generally speaking safe throw is good skill but I wouldnt say it is great one. If you play good elfball you should not find youself in such situation that your only option is to make risk-interception pass. I mean how many time you actually use this one in a game?

In my opinion GW didnt boost HE thrower by making him more expensive and let him have a safe pass (keeping in mind that safe pass skill is weaker in LRB5). Value for money it is ok but these 20k could be used much better...

+AG for the secont HE lineman was probably overkill. On the Catcher, it's stupendous, but on the Line-Elves it's kind of a boutique improvement that you'd only want on one guy to add another dimension.

ST isn't a skill I'd choose either, but it's great having it on it to start with.

Sums up my thoughts perfectly.

As a skill choice at 6 SPP, it's daft. Accurate, Dodge, Strong Arm, Sure Hands, and Kick Off return are all better choices.

As a free ability at 0 SPP's, it's an awesome upgrade that give a new dimension and playstyle to rookie and developed High Elves.
