Wrestle as a skill for the 2nd Dwarf Runner at a Tournament

Hi,

usually I take at a tournament block on one of my runners to play as a ball carrier. I know that some dwarf palyers don't take block because they say that is not their style that the runner get blocked at all.
Sure, but I have won games against other dwarfs where my runners fought against theirs and mine got block, and after thtat the ball.

So I thought some time ago that for the second runner wrestle might be a good idea.

So the job of the second runner is then not to carry the ball but to retrieve it or make road to victory ie. Touchdown.

So basic thoughts.

Job 1. Get the Ball.
I use my runners as interceptors if the opponent tries to brake through. So usually one runner stays back all the time during defence.
The opponent ball carrier has most of the time block, Dodge or both. First choice blitzers are here dwarf blockers with block Tackle. Well most of the time they are not in reach.
So wrestle gives only a bonus if the Ball Carrier has Block, and only block.
If he is Blockless a normal block-runner is always the better choice.

So prime targets for the WrestleRunner (TM) are:
Blitzers from every race.
Gutter runners, Catchers and the like are still better to be Blitzed at with a tackle/block Blocker or a Slayer as he has a second block chance.

Job 2. Make Room.
Every dwarf player now that somehow in turn 7 or 8 the opponnent has regrouped and stays in front of your cage. So with a Wrestle blitz your runner could take down an Orc blitzer on a 4+ with a one dice block. And when serving as a corner of the Cage he is only effective when someone with Block tries to hit him. If a rookie lineman got his both downs a Block Runner would been here also more usefull, as he will led to a tournover, a secured cage and an armour roll.

so what is your oppiniion to that?

I always take Block on one Runner (in fact the last yr I've been playing with only one and haven't regretted it) and have also not skilled up the 2nd one but I'm not sure this is the best use of the limited number of skills you get in tournie environments.

I just can't see it being better than one more Guard player...

I'm a big fan of wrestle - on the right players. Generally having one of your best/fastest players on the ground for dwarves isn't good. With lots of block/tackle & block/frenzy I don't think the extra "put down" power is really worth it. I'd take guard on someone else!

I don't like the idea that one of my two ballhandlers is on the ground for fouling. As dwarf you have enough rerolls to get a neccessary pow on a two-dice block (if you not wasting them for gfi and dodges).

But i don't mind the first td against me. The only problem is to force the opponent to score fast! And therefor guard and mighty blow is great, which helps you again after the defence on the offence. Normally i use the runners only for ballhandling, assists and threatening opponent catchers.

The best skill for dwarfrunners is IMO "kick-off return" because it helps you to build a fast cage.

putting any dwarf prone is a bad idea. I wouldn't even consider wrestle for my runners. (and I do usually put it on my gutter runners...)

Not wanting to hijack the thread but I can't resist:

Except from Diving Tackle on your Blockers.

or piling on.

Tho both still make a slow team even slower..

I know you are trying to cover all your bases, but it's overkill. You don't need it in a tournament. It's only a marginal call in a league too. KOR is much better. You KNOW you'll use that. You may never use wrestle.

For one skill I'd much rather have guard on a longbeard or mighty blow on a troll slayer. Block on the runner is worse than either but still better than KOR IMO.

Whever it be a tourney or a league, the only two skill I would consider would be KOR or Block, never wrestle - sorry but not a good choice IMO.
