doubles on player with ST4

hello,
at first i have to apologize for my bad english, so there could be some mistakes, but i hope you'll understand me.
i thought there would already be some threads with this or something likewise content, but i didn't found it when i jused the boardsearch.

So here's my problem:
I started a norse team in our league. after two games my ulfwerener reached the next level after making some causualties. I threw a 12 on the improvement roll and now i wanted to ask you, which skill you would give him.
I think dodge would be a very nice skill, because later when he gets block as his second skill he would be a really great player with ST4 and blodge.
on the other hand I would like to give him ST 5 so later i would have something like a second big guy, but i don't know wether this is really necessary.

So my question is, what would you commend my ulfwerener? Or would you choose something very different than i?

cheers, BLE

EDIT:
i'm playing in a mostly bashy league. my roster is: 1 berzerker, 1 thrower, 2 ulfwereners, 8 linemen

I have a hard time EVER justifing turning down ST. I just don't think there is a skill that is better than being stronger! I think you said it best...2 big guys! Have fun with your new monster! .S.

Almost always take the ST.

Definitely in this case.

ST5 means he can Frenzy pretty much anywhere, and you rarely need to move a player to account for his second block: if he's giving up an assist, it's 2d anyway! If you're blocking a BOB, you don't need an assist to get 2d. ST5 roxx. ST6 roxx. ST7 on a big guy roxx. ST8 on a Tree is maybe a bit of overkill, but I'd take it if I already had Block.

Pretty much the only way I wouldn't take +ST is if I had a very specialized veteran on a highly skilled team maybe, or maybe if I had a Goblin on an Orc team. Otherwise, I say: don't even think, just get +ST.

ST should always be taken. Always.
ST8 on a Tree is maybe a bit of overkill
There is no such thing as overkill, there is only 'open fire' and 'I need to reload'

Take the +1 St and then take break tackle. He will become a monster! Dodge in with 5 AG, then Frenzy the ball carrier out! :)

As others have said, only a few cases (Halfling Lineman, Snotling?) that you wouldn't take a +1St on.

I think you should get him Block next. ST5/Block/Frenzy = Death To Catcher/Stunty, but ST5/Frenzy is no more reliable (more convenient, yes, but not more reliable) than ST4/Frenzy against the ST3 and ST4 guys who'll be his bread and butter. Remember, it's generally better to have the ok play you know will work than the great play you're not so sure about (yes, there are exceptions, but that's the rule). Besides, once he's got Block, he's an awesome Big Guy hunter and a much less vulnerable 180k TV investment. That lets your Snow Troll go after game-changers like Blitzers and star Chaos Warriors, where he can be a real wrecking ball, while the Ulf pins down (and beats up on) the Big Guy or a BOB/CW or Saurus, pref. one without Block. Against agility teams, you'd miss BT sometimes, but you'd also sometimes (one in twelve actually) be really glad you didn't take it. Besides, with Frenzy, you've already got a good control mechanism -- why would you dodge? If he's marked by an elf/human, he can just cream his mark. That's how you end up winning anyway: early attrition.

Start with the basics. Then you can get him BT at 31.

Mattgslater of course your right. In fact I was going to put in a bit about how my GF's norse team had a Ulf with Block and one with +1st and the one with Block was just way better.

But I though that might confuse him into getting block instead of the +1st, so I took it out. and forgot to add in break tackle after block.

(Cripes even though that's the truth it just sounds like a cheesy excuse!)

Hi BLE, since you're new on the board here you missed out on this discussion, it's worth a read. As you will understand by now take the +ST.

The only reason I don't post on that thread to disagree is that it's 2.5 years old. It's hard to go wrong with +ST, but there are times when you just need the double or need to keep a specific player on track. If I had seven ST4+ players already and got +ST on a ball-getter who needs another skill for a combo, I could totally see taking a skill on boxcars. Just last week I advised someone on this very forum to turn down +ST on a Goblin.

I wouldn't always take +ST. I would in most cases, and this particular case is no exception, but I don't think it's categorically a stupid question.

I would take block on a Treeman if he rolled + ST, took + ST for my ArosBB team Treeman and block would have saved him from making turnovers so many times, its just more usefull, and it makes him a reliable blocker that you actually dare to block with. Same thing goes for some of the other bigguys I would say.

In a really bashy league, I could see taking Block over ST7 with a Treeman. If he's always going up against BOBs and Big Guys, ST6 is as good as ST7 and Block matters. If he's facing a lot of ST3, then go ST7 anyday. ST7 also helps if you're worried about Khemri.

Block is better for Big Guys (and mummies) than +1ST.

Assists are often easy to find, and certainly easier than another double.

See? Everybody's different. I think the easy-to-come-by nature of assists makes +ST comparatively better for Big Guys in leagues without much ST4: Big Guys vs. Big Guys, I think +ST is just a little better, but Big Guys vs. ST3, +ST is like free Block. If you're worried about ST4 teams (Chaos, CD, Orcs, Lizards), then Block is better.

One assist is easy-to-come-by. Two are not.
