Double 5 on HElf Catcher

Hi!

The team is quite new and it's like this:

1 Thrower- Pass,Safe Throw, Accurate, Sure Hands
5 Lineelf - (nothing)
1 Lineelf - Block
1 Blitzer - Block, +1MA
1 Blitzer - Block, Dodge
1 Catcher - Catch, Dodge
1 Catcher - Catch, Dodge, ______ ?

2 Re-rolls
Apothcary
170.000$

Initialy I was considering side step, or even block for his next skill, but then that "double five" made me consider other options, like +1MA!
Any one care to share a thought on this?

By the way, should I go for another catcher and save th rest, or buy another Lineelf and a re-roll?

Cheers
Axt

Nerves of Steel - Catch the ball in tacklezone(s) on a 2+

Mighty Blow - Next skills Block, Tackle and you have yourself a catcherkiller. MA8 Blitzer!!!

All my HE Catchers would end up as Blitzers.
Thus this would be my skill choice.

Good options: Mighty Blow, Guard, NoS (I dont like that one on your team personaly) + Movemement.

Guard is important to av 8 elven teams, and a takeout player with mighty blow is allways nice (next would be block, frenzy and tackle in that order)
+ Movement is very underrated in my book, and it would be well worth taking too.

1: You save alot of go for its
2: Bigger scoring thread
3: You can use him better defensively to put preassure on slow teams
4: its easier to oneturn (and thats a big one)

Man, that's not easy. I think +MA, +AV guard, and Mighty Blow are all good choices on a 5+5. NoS is fine, but if you wanted that you should have chosen Pro Elves!

Personally, I'd probably go +MA.

Gonna play a lot longer? Mighty Blow.

Not? MA.

I agree with Matt. If it's a long league, take the Mighty Blow. If it's a short league, take the speed.

How many games classify as a short or long league?

This should be their 5th game or so, and I guess there wont be more then 10 games (including semi-finals and finals if they qualify).
Its probably a short league right ?
(We're quite short of players too, unfortunatly...)

On the other hand we play a "perpetual league" so I can always get them to play next season.

You two seem to have a Mighty Blow obsession, whats wrong with guard now? :P

Implicitly guard means the guarder is being set up to be hit. This is because naturally guards stand next to two opponents - and probably only one of them is going to get hit - and its then easier to hit the guard than the players around him.

So I'd not take guard on a HE catcher since they are the softest, and most valuable, players on the team already.

Yeah, on any Lino or most Blitzers, I'd say Guard.

5 games left? Only MB if there's a tourney after.

And that is true, but as I see it there is some big "aber dabei's": Guard is very important to many an av 8 elven playing style, so logik says that you godda take it when you can instead of rellying on rolling it on the player of your choosing who hasnt another totally obvious doubles pick. Furthermore; As a skill to help your actions succeed, guard is best on a player with a high movement value, and though a catcher is av 7 + expensive, with str 3 and acces to block and dodge he isnt such a risky pick.
Highelves shouldnt play in alot of tacklezones anyway, but w8 and pick the right turn to attack a cage, so its not like your giving away tons of free blocks on your fragile catcher.

I would also give Guard to some of my woodelf linemen eaven though they are av 7, and from time to time eaven put it on a catcher.

Yeah, but a WE lino is cheaper and doesn't bring anything unique to the table, on a team with at least 10 AV7 guys. A HE Catcher is a pricey positional with fat range and crappy armor, on a team which is otherwise AV8. Big difference in application.

I think the real point is that Guard only really works well once you have two players with it. Otherwise, they just push your guard aside and take the hit they were going to make. With two guards, they can't get trhe clean hit as easily and that's the point.

Agree with Storch on this one as the first blow (almost) always goes to the guard player.

I tend to give guard either to unexpensive linemen that stay on the LOS, or to bllitzers that can take some fight without getting killed easily.

I guess I'd rather give "block" or even "side step" to this specific HE catcher rather than guard after all, along with dodge it would either avoid "both down's" or at least would let me choose the puch back...

Cheers
