Defensive Set up for starting Nurgle Team

Gentlemen

our current season is coming to an end soon and I am going to go for a Nurgle team next season. After reading through the Nurgle topics I decided to go for:

3 Warriors
2 Pestigors
1 Beast
5 Rotters
2 RR
1 FF

Now my questions is regarding the defensive set up. I came up with two set ups and I would like to pick your brains regarding which on is better (or maybe I should go for a completely different one):

Code: Select all

Set up #1:

====+=======+====
----|-R-R-R-|----  W = Nurgle Warrior
--W-|-------|-W--  B = Beast of Nurgle
-R--|B-----W|--R-  R = Rotter
----|-------|----  P = Pestigor
----|-------|----
----|P-----P|----

Set up #2:

====+=======+====
----|-R-R-R-|----
--W-|-------|-W--
-R--|---W---|--R-
----|---B---|----
----|-------|----
----|P-----P|----
Set up #2 is more flexible with the Beast but leaves bigger gaps on the LOS. Set up #1 commits the Beast to one side and leaves it without a "minder".

So which one would you recommend?
or should I go with a different set up?
Or maybe I am going completely wrong with the entire thing and I need to get rid of the Beast with a starting team?

I would NEVER consider any setup where the Beast does not have a babysitter. Also, by putting the Beast on the one side, you are limiting it's usefulness. I would go for option 3, which is like Option 2, but with a twist

Code: Select all

Set up #3:

====+=======+====
----|-W-W-W-|----
----|-------|----
-RR-|---R---|-RR-
----|P--B--P|----
----|-------|----
The warriors have the strength and the armour to stand on the front line in defense. Putting rotters up there iis just asking for them to be sacrafices and then you are at a man disadvantage. Also, don't forget that there will be times where your warriors wil not even be hit due to their Foul Appearance!

I know that there are others who disagree with me, but I do not like starting with the Beast on my league teams. While I fully agree that the Beast is the best BG in Blood Bowl, I still do not like having a player on my team who you cannot rely upon to act when needed. Also, the Beast should not be doing many hits, and so you are really losing out on the muscle game.

Drop the beast and one pestigor and get another rotter and a warrior. First priority is to buy the second pestigor and then the Beast.

Hope this helps.

First of all, don't drop the beast without telling us what the other teams in the league are likely to be. The best is unusual in that it's seriously worth considering in a starting team dependant on the composition of the league. I'd also never, ever, ever recommend starting with 1 Pestigor for your first ever go with a Nurgle side.

Secondly, always place Warriors on the LoS over Rotters. Warriors are the toughest roadbloacks in the game outside of Ogres, Trolls and Undead Mummies. The combination of FA, ST4 + AV9 means they're right at home on the scrimmage, even against harder hitting opponents. The beast should only be placed backfield against Agility teams who might be planning a 2 turn TD and it should never be left without at least one minder..

get the beast on the LOS, having him dribbling in your backfield is such a waste. LOS is where he belongs, you dont even have to activate him for his (checks spelling ;)) tentacles to come into play, have a rotter minder just behind him and have him flanked by 2 warriors with your 3rd in a counter blitz position further back field.

option 3 is looking very good indeed. Thanks. I think the Rotters in the far zones would look better wehn they are diagonally placed - to avoid the blitzing the outter guy out of the way with an assist and then running up the line.

No clue yet as to what the other teams will be. My best guess at this time is that there will be 2-3 human teams and at least 2 Elves (probably different flavors). Maybe some Lizardmen, maybe some Orcs probably an Undead.

And yes, I should put the warriors on the LOS, as both of you pointed out. I forgot how fragile the Rotters are.

Having the beast on the LOS will pretty much lock it there for most of the drive (baring some lucky blocking). And I would prefer it to be able to move to and tie up ball carriers (with the Tentacles). That is why I need it to be behind the line, with a minder.

The beast on the LOS I have found to be very ineffective. The beast is best used to catch the catcher-types who come through the line. Who cares that they have dodge and AG4 when they get caught in the beast's tentacles!

If that's the case then starting out with the Beast is a good move, it's exceptionally strong against Lizardmen, Humans and Elves. Plus it's also pretty good against undead (Ghoul hunting). The only team it's average against there is Orcs and the fact it has Foul Appearance can still cause them problems.

True. But with a bit of luck I can grab the Gobbos. Our resident Ork player loves to use the Gobbos for scoring (either throwing them or sneaking them).
