Braving the 'Flings in the Spike!

Post by Spaceman_Spiff »

Well, I've gone insane and am attempting to be competitive with halflings in the Spike tourney. I've got my roster in mind and have playtested it in about a dozen matches with a fair degree of success. The problem i'm having is choosing skills for the flings in the tourney. You can find the skill progression in some of the other Spike threads i've seen.

The Team:

Deeproot (of course)
2x Treemen
11x Halflings
1x Reroll
1x AC
1x CL
Master Chef (also of course)

The Treemen will be getting Pro instead of the 'obligatory' Block. With easy 3 dice hits, Take Root, Throw Team Mate and 4+ stand up rolls (hey, they're not invinicble) I dont even see this as debatable. I've play tested both and am much happier with Pro.

The flings however, I've tested out a few skills and am still unsure of what to pick with them. I'll get either 3 regular picks or 2 doubles after the trees take their skills.
DP/Sneak git will help me clear the pitch, but I'm soooo unlucky when it comes to rolling doubles on fouls...
Sprint or MA+1 for TTM will help, but i dont find myself chucking flings too often. They do have a tendancy of dying with amazing ease.
AG+ on one fling might help, but if he gets taken out...

bah. I dont know.

HELP!?

Doubles choices: Block, Wrestle, Sure Hands

Normal choices: Diving Tackle, Side Step

Both are popular choices in the NAF tournies I've seen.

One thing I might suggest is doing everything you can to deny your opponent from having any Rerolls. The Master Chef is the first (and obligatory) step to this - a couple of coaches and cheerleaders and maybe a FF or two is also helpful.

As for skills, I would take block on the treemen before pro. No question.

I have also tried having a halfling with Hail Mary and then a few with Diving Catch. This will really put fear into your opponents!

Otherwise SideStep is one of my favourite skills for the 'flings.

Hail Mary is an option i haven't considered yet. I'll have to try it out in a game or two and see if it helps. The downside is that I'll be able to back it up with one diving catch at most by the end of the tourney. 120k worth of skills by game 7 and half of it is eaten up by the trees. stupid trees.
