Chaos warrior or minotauer for new team...

Post by Sveske »

Hello all!

I have just started to play Blood Bowl. The reason for this is that me and my friends started to watch NFL last year and we need something to do during all the breaks. We have all played Warhammer or 40K before so we are familiar with the universe.

I decided too play Chaos because I like the whole history about them and the fact that they are evil, EVIL I SAY!!! Argh... must get grib of reality...

OK enough blabbering.

My team looks like this:

10 BM, 1 CW, 1 minotauer, 5 FF and 2 RR

I then decided to get some ideas on tactics and stumbled across this side and I read a great post from Balrog and I decided that I need more RR and FF. So here´s the Q:

Should I skip the CW or the minotauer? I really like the idea of that big guy smashing the other team but I am conserned about the wild animal skill. Pros and cons for both would be very much apreciated.

Cheers

Neither. Get a troll, they rock!

But if you don't like the troll, definitely go with the chaos warrior. Minotaurs suck nowadays with the new wild animal trait.

The best way to go, of course, is to start with 9 FF if you can. Failing that, get 3 rerolls.

Bro, drop the minotaur like a bad habit. You need to have an experienced team to cover for when that horned goof knocks himself down....as he's SURE to do, especially if he's a rookie.

I'd start a Chaos team with at least 2 Warriors. They make Chaos what it is. You don't have ANY skills at ALL...so you need that extra ST to help out.

Don't take the minotaur. Do a search for threads on Wild Animal to find out why.

I've heard an interesting starting Chaos team - all Beastmen and max out FF and RR. Then use all your money to buy the CW's into the team.

However I'd probably just start with 2 CWs.

Hi and welcome to TalkBB !!

My suggestion to you would be to start with 1 Chaos Warrior, 10 Beastmen, 3 RR and 9 FF. This gives you a solid starting lineup, no unreliable players (Minotaur or Troll) and max fan factor which is really nice. Although Big Guys are fun to have they can be very frustrating if you get unlucky with them, and as a rookie coach I wouldn't recommend starting with one. Later on, when your team develops you'll be able to afford an Ogre, and by then it'll just be icing on the cake.

Good luck!

I start with the following:
7 beastmen
3 chaos warriors
1 ogre
9 FF
1 Reroll

This gives you very high strength and with AG3 players all around you can get around with only 1 reroll.
If you want another reroll, you can easily go with:
8 beastmen
2 chaos warriors
1 ogre
9 FF
1 Reroll

9 Fan Factor is a must because of the high cost of your chaos warriors and rerolls.

I would never go with a minotaur because of his AV8 and wild animal. I would also always choose an ogre over a troll because I don't care much for the Really Stupid trait.

I think all the hullaballoo about Wild Animal on this message board is greatly over-inflated. Sure, Wild Animals aren't Line of Scrimmage guys anymore, but really -- were Minotaurs ever Line of Scrimmage guys, even with straight Third Edition?

Wild Animal places some limits on where Minotaurs and Rat Ogres are most useful now, but they are still valuable contributions to the various teams that can field them, if played sensibly, IMO.

Yeah, go with Balrog's proposition. It's the best, most common and most sensible starting chaos team.

My Current starting team:

8 Beastmen
2 Chaos Warriors
1 Ogre
2 Re Rolls
1 Apoth
1 Fan Factor

Even tho the FF is low this team had an excellent opening game against High Elves. They even won a pitch invasion, thanks to the HE coach rolling snake eyes.

I think it was Balrog that first pointed it out to me...

11 Beastmen
4 Re-Rolls
6 Fan Factor

I like it, I've played with it now, and its more successful early on that the more normal:
1 Chaos Warrior
10 Beastmen
3 Re-Rolls
9 Fan Factor

Has slighty better players, (but you Blitz at ST 4 anyway), more FF, but Chaos have no skills - of which the vital ones are Sure Hands and Block.
You'll spend a Re-Roll getting the Ball, and some on Blocks where you roll 1's & 2's... you just generally need the 4 Re-Rolls for doing anything.

The simple way to look at it is does 1 ST 4 player while Blocking whose slower than the rest of your already slow team outweight what having an extra Re-Roll allows - I doubt it.

Play with Chaos a bit... they are one of the worst Starting teams however you do it tho.

Wild animal has been discussed to death so i'll not go into it, just to reiterate, dont choose a Minotaur.

The Minotaur will cost you games. Do you have fun with coaching problems? How about winning games? What do you want to do? The Minotaur will give you fits but can be fun. Personally, he fills my 16th slot, though.

I played a Chaos team that started with 1 reroll last season. I went 3-10 or some such. All AG3 players means you need 3 rerolls to start with. I'd suggest either the 11 beastman or 10 beast + 1 CW lineup.

Beastmen are really decent players to make a whole team out of. They get strength skills (Guard is key!), blitz at ST4, and can become very flexible when they mutate. Don't overlook, for example, things like Big Hand and Foul Appearance. I would even suggest Big Hand before Claw (maybe, claw is so tempting).

I really also like minotaurs. WA is a problem, so you shouldn't get the mino until your team has advanced a little and can support the mino. But you can work around WA by giving it Piling On, for example. Then you get +6 to the armor roll, +1 to injury (since it has mighty blow), and it is prone so you don't have to take that bad block. A prone minotaur is a fouling target, but then you've got a bunch of your opponents standing around the mino. Take advantage of that and score. Toss in the frenzy thing, and you have a really fast blitzer that can push people out of bounds. Plus, they can mutate. Summary: minotaurs are better than people give them credit for, but wait until you've got some other good stuff on your team.

I like Korhils suggestion, that 4th reroll will help a great deal.

I think you find (as Korhil points out) that was the line up that Balrog started his winning MBBL campaign with!
