Observations on Slann

Post by SillySod »

I just wrote a long topic on Slann tactics... and login timed out and lost it.... :?: Guess I'll edit this post sometime when I find time again.... :(

A few key points...

- stripball is essential
- skills on catchers are nice but in a tournament I'd prioritise blitzing skills (probably a single dodge catcher)
- you dont need to leap into the cage every turn but you need to do it several times during a drive
- consider blitzing the corner off a cage using your kroxigor
- expect your catchers to die quickly, not alot you can do about it but make sure you have plenty
- score quickly on offence, only delay if you are confident you can score next turn (things can go badly fast, your chances of scoring decrease as the drive goes on)
- try and get redundancy in your blitzing skills, it opens up new angles of attack and protects against injuries
- say "slimy slimy slann" and your opponents will fail dodge rolls
- your apothecary should be a chewy lizard sweet, nothing else will work

If you find yourself playing against slann...

- cage the ball in some way, loose cages are best because they restrict leaping
- get yourself surehands and preferably blodge
- a guard on either side of the ball is a great protection against blitzes
- focus on keeping the ball secure, slann mostly dont have the muscle to pressure a formation/cage the way that most teams have to
- foul the players with wrestle or stripball (or tackle or whatever), blitz the catchers

Damn!

Please find the energy to do it again! I'd like to read it.

But next time, write it in a text program and save it!

I'll be waiting.

Any tactics guide you write will consist of "roll lots of 6's, and make your opponent roll lots of ones", at least after your effort this weekend.

It included an essential paragraph on selection of your apothecary :) I guess an extra section of saying "slimy slimy slann" every time you want Darkson to fail a dodge can be arranged

Sorry for hijacking this but i thought it might be a good spot for some answers.

I jsut played my first game with slann against orcs. It was a great game and i made 3 Touchdown. Bad luck happened in one of the last turns. The orcs catched my Star Blitzer (who just made two of the three Touchdowns) and broke his Neck (-1 AG)

He got a normal skillup.

Now the question is is it worth to keep a Blitzer with -1 AG and a skill up or not?
And if not is it worth to keep the team at all if i got baicly alot more less then win in the game?

Thats the team btw Ranoidea Anura

every team who can should make a Mighty Blow, Pile On guy.

Slann Blitzers have the added bonus of Jump Up.

Me, I'd take Block with eyes on MB, PO, Tackle... You don't need much AG for that... Keep him!

I'd keep him until you've got the other Blitzer and positionals. Yeah he's not great but stick Block on him and his AG won't be too much of a factor. They're too expensive to retire repeatedly.

That's a shame, Sod.

Never played with or against Slann. Roster looks interesting though.

Don't look 'Tier 1' cos of lack of basic skills, but they have good all round speed and obviously have a few of freaky tactics up their sleeves.

As much as it pains me to agree with someone descended from a gene pool that actively hangs monkeys for treason, but I just can't see many tournaments in with Slan teams.

Do the blitzers really start without block? If so they should definately be renamed cause all blitzers in the game have block- mainly because they are able to do one dice blitz' against standard players.

Der_doodle may have named the positions differently, but i've never looked at the "official" slan roster so i wouldn't know.

And catchers should start with catch.

understood

This team is different. Its fun comes from being not standard.

This is a team you build up in league play and you will see it at tournaments. Since the NAF started tracking Slann at tournaments ... 2 have been run that allowed the Slann team in ... and both of them had players bring a Slann team.

====

Bottom line ... this is a different team. The Slann are all about jumping. If you look at their skills ... they ALL relate to some type of jump.
Jump = Jump Up
Leap = Leap, Very Long Legs
Diving = Diving Catch, Diving Tackle

All their skills are jumping related. They are doing fine in league play from all leagues that have reported in. And in just their first 2 tournament plays they turned in 4 wins - 2 ties - 5 losses which is a 50% win record ... which isn't that bad ... definitely not one showing an immediate requirement to change anything.

Its a different team ... different doesn't mean bad.

Galak.

One could wonder why they are not "runners" though. instead of Blitzers.

Or was that too confusing as runners are either pass or catch?
Didn't want to get into the or blitz thing?

Not knocking the player or the theme, just asking about the naming decision.

I guess it never really struck me as odd because I imagined the positional as a man-marker (diving tackle) which sounds like a blitzer's role to me. I'm not sure runner really makes sense as their whole job is to be a defensive pain in the @$$.

Having played against sillysods slann a few days ago, the 1 thing i know for sure is that a catcher with a double skill should take guard, unless youve got guarders yourself it makes it almost impossible to protect the ball carrier.

Anyone that struggles to pick up the ball is going to have a big problem against slann as you just cant pin them down.

I think slann are a nice addition to the teams we already have they certainly dont play like any of the other teams.

I like the team idea, just not the names.
