First skill on a mummy on strong undead team

Hi,

I coach a new Undead team with only two matches played so far. I've been really lucky with improvement rolls and gotten +ST on a Ghoul AND a Wight. After pummelling a Necro team into oblivion I got a normal skill on a Mummy too.

Maybe it's just bad memories of being overpowered by a Lizard team in the first match, but I simply can't think of a better skill than Guard for the Mummy. Stand Firm would be nice, but I can't get myself to take it before Guard. Should I?

Other options considered are Grab and Break Tackle. BT seems ineffective on an MA3 player. Grab would be nice against sidestepping Elves if I can catch them.

I'm playing Dwarves next then Pro Elves in a Perpetual League.

To guard or not to guard?

Against Dwarves? Guard. You can't run the risk of them out-Guarding you and removing your biggest advantage - S5.

Against anyone else? Guard. Getting in those assists means you can get 3 dice blocks against S3 players with only two Guarders. Which is insanely brutal.

You know, Grab might be a consideration.

Against the dwarves, you can push those players with Guard out of the way where they will be less of a nuisance. Against the pro-elves, with their built in Side-Step, Grab will be a relief!

Guard is the obvious choice, but Grab is more fun!

The argument for grab feels like it would focus on the pro elves. Do you fear them? Do their blitzers have dodge? Have you any tackle? Have they other side steppers? Based on the answer to those you might find yourself saying yes to grab.

Otherwise I'd take guard first. I'm not saying stand firm isn't good, but without block or dodge you are getting knocked down a bit when being hit, and if you aren't being hit you aren't using it.

I'm with Ian. I know that when I run PEs I tend to stock up on SS linos and use them on the line or as ILBs, depending on whether my oppo has something like a Grab Mummy. If you don't, you're not chain-blocking the line and you're not getting through, and you better be lucky with ball control or I'll make hash of you by turning the game over every other turn. But if you're not afraid of the PEs, then get Guard on the first Mummy to put him at NT, and then Stand Firm on the other to stick him on the ILB opposite the ST4 Wight. When the ST4 Ghoul gets Block, you've got the ultimate corner, leaving you with only one ST3 side and a Wight conveniently left to take Guard and protect that corner from the OLB spot. If the ST4 Ghoul gets a third advance, you could take Frenzy to increase your damage potential, or SS to shut down half the field from the corner spot and mitigate the hazard presented by AV7.

I don't think that Grab is going to be focused on Pro Elves only, it is a skill that has many interesting uses once you have had a chance to play with it.

Like I said, Guard is the obvious choice, and probably the best one. But Grab is one of those skills that often gets chosen on a third (or later) pick. Taking it to test it's potential and learning how to use it can be fun. Which is the reason that I suggest it.

If you want to play to win, then Guard/Stand Firm either of those are a good first choice. On a mummy those are both nasty skills (especially in combination).

Nobody for Strong Arm? :P

Grab is an interesting idea. Guard is likely the best, but getting 1 guard mummie and 1 grab mummie for the first skills would be pretty useful.

I only said that because Halskov1 focused on Dwarves & Pro Elves as his next game. Against Dwarves I'd rate Guard as a much more important skill, so its only if the fear factor is much higher for the pro elves I'd take grab instead.
