First skill on a halfling

Greetings,
I'm just about to start a new halfling team and I've noticed that the recommended first skill to take is diving tackle. Now I'll be the first to admit that I have not played nor played against flings in my blood bowl career. But this skill choice doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Diving tackle comes into play "after an opposing player attempts to dodge out of any of his tackle zones". Why would anyone dodge a player out of a square that is next to an av 6 player? I would assume that they would rather stay where they are and try and knock him down next turn.
If someone could explain the benefit(s) of that skill choice to me I would really appreciate it. And if you have the time maybe share a few halfling tactics that might help me.
Thanks

DT is good for lots of reasons. Get a DT into an awkward position (like next to the ball) and he may well draw the blitz. Also it means that even elves won't try to run past you without thinking hard about it.
Personally I'm a big fan of sidestep, not as precise as DT but helps keep them alive a bit longer.
Also sure feet is nice as it helps speed them up a bit.

You don't have to be standing next to a guy for DT to be important.
Often it's use to cut down the paths an opponent can run down.
The players you want to leave your halfing standing by are few and are almost always players that don't want to block you.

I use diving tackle to bind opponents to the trees. Stick a DT-hafling beside a tree and go player hunting.
Guard is a must on the trees btw.
This is how I prioritize:
If skill;
either one of:
Jump Up, Sprint, Sure feet, Diving Tackle (diving catch if Hail mary already in team)
Extra; Side Step
On doubel;
Strip Ball, Guard, Hail Mary Pass, Dirty Player
Extra; Block
Lets face it, your haflings are gonna die. Alot. Dont waste a double on a block to try to increase their survivability unless they already have a skill that makes them useful. Thats my rule.
If I already got a skill on the hafling, id take either Block (double) or Side Step (Single) next, to try to keep that hafling alive.
Strip Ball is your best friend. I went wiht HMP and diving catch in my current team, and regret it. Id rather have strip ball and some other useful skills instead. After youve gotten strip ball, guard might be interesting to get better cagebreaking capabilities, but I havent tried it myself. Dont seem to get that many doubles.

DT is a fantastic skill in a stunty league. You have to use dodge in a normal league to get away from your opponent's players and make sure he/she has only one blitz per turn. Then PubBowler's comments come to the fore and you are denying your opponent any easy path to the ball.

A Diving Tackle Halfling standing in between two Guard Treeman on the LOS is actually quite a scary image. Risk dodging away and being beaten to a pulp by the Trees when you turn over, or stand there and get beaten to a pulp, or try to bash the effective S4 Halfling away before then trying to dodge away?
Not a situation I'd like to be in.
I'd say you'd need 3 Diving Tacklers (minimum). Then 2 Sure Feeters. The rest can get Sidestep.
For second skills, I'd be looking at:
Diving Tackle - Sidestep/Guard/Tackle
Sidestep - Sure Feet/Wrestle
Sure Feet - Sprint/Sure Hands
Nothing really ground breaking, but meh.

Thanks for explaining that to me...I'm definitely seeing the benefits for diving tackle on a halfling.
The article on halflings had a tonne of valuable information which I will try and take advantage of.
Thanks again.
