Hi all,

the local league got underway. I had/have a hard time deciding what team to use, but since I am planing on playing Woodies in some upcoming tournaments I went with them.
Besides, I've never payed them before and it will give me an excuse to finish their paintjob.

Anyway: I found the startingroster in the sticky: 2 Wardancers, 2 RRs, 9 linos, 30K distributed between FF, AC and CL.
Wouldnt it be better to either save the 30K for the next purchase ? (apo)
Or to upgrade a lino to a catcher or a thrower ?

The league isnt big, 6 players myself included. We all play eachother twice, so 10 games. Probably some kind of play-off after that.

Teams: Vampire, Necromantics, Lizardmen, Skaven, Orcs.

First purchase: apo, next: 2nd catcher, passer, treeman, catcher 3, ... this all if the winnings in GPs are more or less kind to me. I am counting on low winings, so I probably wont go further than apo, 2nd catcher, thrower... If I ever can buy a RR I'm happy enough .

With those opponents, I'd definitely upgrade a lino to a Catcher!

I like having a thrower on the roster to grab the Leader skill once they level up. Woodies will burn through your RRs and Leader ups your total and still allows for buying more players.

Depending on the length of the league, I like to try all line-elves and wardancers. The AG4 makes all of your players threats to pass, catch and score and you'll spread the SPP around a bit more.

Q: are you playing LRB5 or LRB5+/LRB6 experimental? The Catchers have had their MA dropped to 8 & sprint in LRB5+ so their one turn touchdown threat is reduced now.

See how nobody starts with Tackle? Players who start with Dodge will reduce the load on your Wardancers. Starting a Catcher comes with the added bennie that the Catch skill makes it easier to share the Completion love.

There is merit in that. If you were facing a dwarfy schedule it would be my advice. I think that as a newer coach, you're better off learning from the perspective of having a Catcher.

Put the Catcher in the middle of the backfield on offense. After you bust open the D-line (or bust a hole somewhere else and just cover the line with zones) and run your targets (linos, especially ones who are 2-7 SPP from skilling, WDs) downfield, use another guy (any guy who could use 1 SPP except a WD or Tree) to throw the ball to the Catcher and use his superior MA to get out of blitzing range. Then, you have a Catcher to throw on the next turn, whose +1 MA is likely to add +1 to the pass. Should you have coverage, Dodge/MA8 makes it easy to break out. Also note that against many teams you can stick him on the line on Turn 8, then use either a Frenzy WD or a Grab Treeman to chainpush him upfield for a 1TTD. Game it right, and you don't even have to blitz to get him up there, leaving your blitz action open to give him receiving room. This works really well if you have an Accurate Thrower, as a deep ball can make it tough and you are usually out of TRRs by then. Sure Feet on a Catcher also helps, and has excellent defensive value to boot.

Once you buy a Thrower (purchase 2 after Apoth, unless you luvv them Trees), he gets recovery duty until he improves and gets Leader or Accurate. Leaders ideally get 2 turns per half on the field, but Accurate Throwers supplant this guy and put him in the receiving corps (or off the field) on offense. The offensive strategy doesn't change (throw to QB, drop back, let play develop, throw TD on turn 2), regardless of opponent or development: the tactics may vary and the required skills.

Develop strictly for defense, except on a few players, like one Thrower and maybe Catcher #3 or 4, who should be built strictly for offense. Aggressively skill your linemen and give Kick to the first guy, Dodge to the next three, alternating Wrestle and Side Step as a second selection or as a #1 after the top 4. Make your opponents pay for not having any dwarfs in their midst. Until they load up on Tackle (more than 2), flood the line with Dodge linemen. Wood Elf Catchers are the game's third-best free safeties, after the disturbingly-good Pro Elf Catchers and Gutter Runners, and they're competitive with Gutter Runners in low-skill formats. On defense, Catch is great: if you unearth the ball with whoever (and you can't control who all the time), then you can turn it into a TD with a Catcher.

I agree with Matt, the catcher comes with built-in skills that make your game more reliable. Due to his high MA he also makes for a good thrower-substitute (although he'll probably just run in for the handoff) when you really want to score with someone else.
But I would build all 4 catchers for defensive duty (offensively they're good enough right out of the box) and not take any throwers untill you have a Treeman. The treeman really helps a lot keeping your team alive.

I'll play my first game tonight, probably vs. skaven. He might change to Orcs, not sure (you can never be sure with this guy ! ).

I was thinking about the thrower to get a "leader" reroll, but then again I will be playing them in a tournie (different, I know) with 2 RR and a Treeman (probably).

I'll stick with the catcher for now, seems good. I'll try and let linos pick up the ball and pass it to the thrower, or hand-off and THEN pass it to the thrower... whatever is needed.
I will try to get some completions here and there, just to make sure my linos skill up with an MVP so they can get wrestle or block, for the LOS.
And kick, of course... (not on the LOS, obviously).

I'll let you know, might even start some kind of blog with this. I need to finish painting them too before the BUBBLE (september), might as well throw that is to keep myself going.
