Starting a goblin team

Post by furstyferret »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this website and pretty new to the game. A few of us are talking about starting a league and among other teams I think Goblins will be good for a 'fun' team. So any views would be most welcome.

Heres my initial team:

10 Gobbos
2 Trolls
Bombardier
Looney
5 re-rolls.
That comes out at dead on 1,000,000.

I have one other question...In a lot of team articles they talk about removing Really Stupid on a double. Is this still applicable or is it an optional rule? I can't seem to find it in the downloadable rulebook.

Cheers Craig

Removal of Nega-traits :That is very old school and wasn't really official

although I have seen it house ruled, even recently heard about it on the 3-die Block podcast

if that was possible I would probably take a Vampire team in a heartbeat

Hi and welcome!

Your initial team look fine to me.
The fanatic is a nice adition to the team too, but you can always buy it later.

As for you other question like voyagers_uk said, some leagues may house-rule it, but theres nothing in the LRB 5.

[I do remember something of that sort many years ago (and perhaps a couple LRB too), but theres nothing on that subject there right now].

Good luck on your team and have fun!
A.

Do a search on Goblin teams in league tactics section for hints....

The team is decried as Tier-3 for a reason... HARD to win with... loads of fun? Sure... but my friend and I even tested them with 50k bribes and FOUR trolls... and they still lost, consistently, to top tier teams....

One option is to "low-ball" the rest of the league.... Goblins become "funner" when you're down enough TV to start affording Star Player Loonies and Fanatics! Nothing like playing with a starting line of 2x Trolls (induce Ripper) and 2x Fanatics (induce Fungus).... You might even get enough for a 300,000 Halfling Chef.... Watch the fun as the other team tries a game with no rerolls....

Totally avoid Dwarves... Tackle will ruin your day....

While the bombadier looks fun, he's a train wreck waiting to happen to your team.... My favorite Special Weapons, in order, are: Fanatic, Pogoer, and --------.... Just those two! If you want a chainsaw (mucho FUN!) then induce the one with survivable skills....

Watch out for "too many Secret Weapons", as gobbos pop easy and you may find your opponent scoring a turn early, just so you'll have to field them on turn 8 of the first half and limit their use....

If you have a "Nuffle may care" attitude, and enjoy mayhem/her... this team is the one for you!

Agree.

Save money in your treasoury. It will give you inducements AND the possibility to recover deads and injuries to play next game when (for sure!) they come.

Think about to have 12-13 no-secret weapons ready to play (not missing next game) in all matches and remind that players that miss next game allow their position to be occupied by Star Players. So maybe in few journeys you can have full 16 player rosters simply getting Star Players in the injuried positions.

I usually took two fanatics and one looney as well. Nobbla have Blodge, but your looney can re-roll de chainsaw 2+ attack. This is your choice.

Dont take rostered bombardier, for 20k more you can have the star which has accurate. Rostered chainsaw, I would consider (for losing loner, and chance to get dirty player on a double!).. As well as the pogoer/fanatics.

You should aim at max 850k-900k starting roster, with plenty of spare players (for 2-3 bribes).

Something like:
12 goblins 480k (can take chainsaw instead of one goblin)
2 trolls 220k
2 rerolls

1 cheer
1 coach
1 FF
(or skip coach/cheer&FF for the pogo or fanatic (30k each)).

Gobboes are a HARD team to win with, piling on trolls and fouling goblins will be key to winning the CAS-game at least though.

I agree with this but want to expand on it.

220 2 Trolls
360 9 Goblins

This is a must.

After this, taking 2 rerolls gives you Ripper as an inducement
or 3 rerolls give you some SWs as inducements.

But which ever you choose, try to keep Ripper on your team for future, he is an awesome fixture for a Goblin side.

If you go ripper, then surely:

220k 2 Trolls
360k 9 goblins
120k 2 rerolls
30k/40k, replacing one gobbo with pogo, or getting looney, or getting 10th gobbo
260k/270k treasury/inducement -> enough for ripper on the first game..

Agree, ripper is awesome, and pretty bargain price as well.

I play goblins in a closed league that doesn't allow star players to be induced and my advice is to load up on spares. The bombardier is my least favourite of the secret-weapon goblins, but you'll have a pretty good time with it if the other coaches have low-Agility teams. Still, I prefer the fanatic and the pogoer's better MA can come in handy.

I've dreamt of having trolls that could be relied up on all the time, but there's nothing the rulebook about it. If you find it so bothersome, take Pro on doubles instead (although Block would probably be my first choice).

Thanks for all the comments. I never considered keeping the team cost down as much as possible and using the difference to purchase lots of inducements. :D

I somehow had a feeling that buying out negatives was either an older rule or something that was optional.
