What next for my 'umies?

Post by TheAzman »

I have a Human team that is 8 games into a 13 game (not including playoffs) season.

I have 2 blitzers with guard, 1 blitzer with thick skull (and AV 7)
and 1 blitzer with 1 SPP from getting a skill after block.. Should I just give him guard also, or something like strip ball? Dodge, side step, or jump up on doubles? I don't know.

I also have an Ogre, 2 linos with block, a catcher with block and ST +1, and a thrower with accurate and leader. Assuming my other linos on my team get a skill soon, should I give them block also? Or something like fend, tackle, or even dauntless?

There are so many skills to choose from, and so many possibilities I just can't decide!

Does anyone have any suggestions? They will be greatly appreciated! :)

The subject "What next for my 'umies?" would be really helpful for people using the search feature later on... specially for an international forum with plenty of non-english speaking people.

- Mighty Blow, Guard or perhaps Tackle for the blitzer who's about to get a skill. Blitzers cost more due to having access to S skills and for good reason
- Fire the Thick Skull blitzer and buy a replacement (the replacement will be as useful and will cost less and be able to get actually useful skills sooner than this guy)
- Strip Ball is not a good skill for an AG3 player without Dodge. The +ST catcher could perhaps take it next depending on the teams you're facing
- Consider taking Kick on one of the linemen, otherwise Block or Wrestle is a solid first skill choice. Ooh, and how about one Dirty Player?

I'd recommend, if you can spare the cash, cutting that injured blitzer and getting a fresh one. Thick Skull is a nice...garnish, but it's not a huge loss, and AV 8 is preferable to AV 7 with Thick Skull.

Strip Ball is a solid choice for the Blitzer about to hit his level; for doubles, I'd say Diving Tackle or Side Step. As for linos, Block and Wrestle are usually the first skills to be taken, Dirty Player if you have no problem being a bit of a jerk.

Are you playing LRB5 or LRB5+/6?

I agree, fire the hurt blitzer, he is adding unneeded team value.

I like block/wrestle on all my linemen first. The only exception would be on doubles, then I would go guard.

If the Ogre ever skills up, I'd go guard unless its doubles and then it would be block.

Squize in a Lino with Kick.
With the speed of the Blitzers and Catchers you can really harrass the ball carrier. Even without scoring TDs (which you will do at some point) you will force your opponent to respond to you.

Apart from that, Block/Wrestle is always good. A Dirty Player can be helpful for the prone Gutter Runners.

On doubles, Dodge is always useful!

Cheers!

All above advice is solid.

Thick Skull is a great skill... if you start with it on your profile (free on most players who have it) and don't spend a skill up for it. Otherwise, it's best to pretend that Thick Skull is a mutation or something and not open to your player. Fire that guy with prejudice, call it a lesson learned, and take Blitzer skills like Stand Firm, Guard, Mighty Blow or Tackle, or if you feel adventurous, maybe Frenzy, Pro, or Grab.

I guess Thick Skull is ok at 76 SPP on a Blitzer who's loaded up on positioning skills, including Side Step. But except as free/nearly-free starting skills and late selections on players who can get combo value, stay away from those Tier 3 skills, eh?

Wow everyone! Thanks for the advice on my human team. I will probably wait one more game to fire the blitzer so I can have 4 of them against the Amazon team I'm playing next. I think I'll be able to win, so I will use my winnings to buy the new Blitzer and fire the AV 7 guy. ( my buddies and I play with the extra cash option on pg.34 LRB 5: 20K extra for winning/ties,10K extra for losing ) I'm pretty confident I can get the cash in a game or so. By the way, does anybody else use the extra cash option? Sometimes I feel like we shouldn't do it. I don't know.....

I think that as long as your league is consistent in using the extra cash option, and it's what your players want (e.g., they like it), it's fine. Whatever works for your league is good.

Sounds like your team will be in pretty good shape once you dump the broken blitzer. Good luck taking down the 'zons!

Thanks! I mangaged to only tie the 'zons in the first game I played them after losing 3 players the game before to an incompetent coach of a Dwarf team and his lucky ass dice!!
