So the league I am in allows players to choose their own mvp each game.

After the first game I can up a lineman or catcher or blitzer - who first? what to choose?

On a rookie team a wider spread of skills is always a plus so would look to skill the line frog

blitzer.

Otherwise, they are impossible to upgrade.

Anyway, I would not play blitzers at all. 4 catchers, krox and 8 linemen that is all.

I'd use the skill to prepare for the aerial assault on a cage.

With that in mind I'd take Block on a blitzer. I assume the other teams are rookie teams as well, so a Block blitzer should be able to take down opposing ball carriers as they shouldn't have Block yet. If you assume that the next opponent might use a Block player as a ball carrier, take Wrestle on a lino.

After next game, take Wrestle on a lino or Block on a blitzer.

I'd say it depends a lot on your league. If teams seem to be low on Sure Hands, then Strip Ball early on can help you tremendously on defence. Don't overlook Kick as an early skill too, since the frogs are capable of putting high pressure on the opponents from turn 1.

I don't understand why most people seam to think that blitzers should take block and linos should take wrestle. In my mind the opposit sounds better, as the blitzer has JU and thus it's not as much a draw-back needing to place him prove when he uses wrestle.

The blitzer.
I skill-less blitzer is a mess.
A blitzer with block or wrestle is a massively improved player.

My own reasoning is that Block is a better combination with S skill access. Either make a blitzer a killer or give him Guard and Side step. Both types are better served with Block. From this perspective Jump up is just a nice bonus and goes some way towards justifying all the cost. It also goes together nicely with Diving Tackle which also works great with Side Step. But for that purpose you still need the blitzer on his feet.

Overall I think Block is a better addition. The linos are better suited for the role of ball sacker with Wrestle and Strip Ball.

For a short league I guess Wrestle would be better as most players would be looking at one or two skills tops, but in those instances I wouldn't bother with Blitzers in the first place.

Exactly my view

I would also agree with Ullis for all the reasons he mentioned, but would like to suggest two more.

If a lineman and a blitzer are both lying on the ground after having used wrestle, which one would you choose to foul?

I disagree with Carnis that a blizter will never skill up without the MVPs, but certainly by giving them block you give them the opportunity for SPPs that Wrestle will not provide.

Blitzers are more valuable than linos, and harder to skill up than catchers, so I would give the blitzer the skill.

I'll just add that for the Killer build, Jump Up combos well with Piling On, but Piling On combos badly with Wrestle.

Would anyone have any views on whether to pick Piling On before MB if you have Jump Up already? Is MB still better?

With my Norse I use Pilling On only on the stunned results, so I find best to take Mighty Blow first and then Pilling On.
Once you have both it's Rock N'Roll...

PO is marginally better, IF and ONLY IF you use it every time (armor, stun). About 6% as I recall. I made the mistake of taking piling on first on my first norse zerker in LRB5. It took him ages to recover from.

MB you get to use 100%, piling on only if you follow up (so not vs fend) and only if you block (so not when you get blocked and opponent skulls or bothdowns) and if you are willing to give up position by going prone for a reroll on armor/injury.

If you plan to use piling on only to reroll stuns, then it's universally better to go with MB.

Finished the half (game was on temp hiatus when i posted) and made some good plays earning enough points for blitzer and lino to each go up

Lino - +AG or skill
Blitzer - +mv/+AV/Skill

so I guess this reopens my question a little - I like the skill suggestions above but do the stat upgrades outweigh these?
