Apo for Elves?

Post by The Painted Goblin »

As I'm a total newcomer to tournament play, can anyone tell me if it is worth taking an apo for an elf team (of any flavour)? I've experienced their worth in league play, but would I be better spending 50k elsewhere, when in most tourneys, all deaths/inujuries are automatically wiped after each game anyway?

Some could argue that your money is better spent on another line elf, but in all the rosters I've pondered over, an extra 10k or 20k can make a big difference, and as it is, most elf lineups can only just field 11 players unless they forego those vital re-rolls.

I'm assuming for 100TV or 110TV (as most tournaments seem to be set up this way)

I'm not looking for a definitive answer here - I'm just interested in hearing peoples opinions/advice :)

Hi,

I'm still pretty new to using Dark Elves, and have never used them in a tourny, but am planning on using them later this year. I wouldn't take a apoth in this situation as I would rather spend the extra 50k on upgrading a lineman to a blitzer and a lineman to runner. Either that or an extra re-roll.

Like I said though, I'm pretty new to Elves. Although I take casualties in most games I can still score with numerical disadvantage so would rather have better positional players if its a resurrection tourny.

Hope that helps.

In LRB6/CRP I'd always take one if I could afford it. I think it's definitely better than a 12th man.
However at 1.1 with elves you'll often find you can't once you have your positionals.

To fit one in with DEs you are having to drop a reroll/blitzer/WE to squeeze it in, and it's probably not worth it.

At 1.1M I'd take an Apoth with any Elf team. At 1M I would not take an Apoth with any Elf team, or possibly just with Pro Elves.

I believe an Apoth can work fine on any Elven team in a tourney, but more particularly for Dark Elves and High Elves, to give them some staying power.

The Apoth acts as a poor man's 12th man. Whether an Apoth is the best choice would depend to an extent on the house rules for the tourney.

There is a random element to the Apoth in a tourney. For example, if you get lots of K.O.s, and none of your CAS are Badly Hurt, the Apoth may be wasted, whereas if the first injury you suffer is Badly Hurt on a skilled positional player, obviously the Apoth has more than done his job.

The apoth is great for elves. Cheaper than even a Lineman and you can use it in the second half (or towards the end of the first half) to keep a KO player on the pitch as well.

keeping a player on the pitch is something that is not to be undervalued

Thanks everyone - I can see the value in the "poor mans' 12th man" argument. It's a strong one, and even stronger when you consider that a 50k apo could save one of your higher costing positionals (especially as some of these will have a big target painted all over them - pro-elf catcher for example).

Of course, it's only worth anything if you re-roll a BH result, putting your man in the reserves box. Bit of a risk vs a definite substitute (albeit an unskilled line-elf)

It's not just worth that, of course if the injury was a BH you know for sure you get your player back.

The fact you can use it on a KO as well is not to be sniffed at, this fact plays an ever bigger part the later in the game it is.
