Norse Yhetees

Post by Master Wang »

I have a very poorly performing Norse team with 11 players, 3 re-rolls and the worst armour in the world (last game against Nurgle saw me finish with 3 players on the pitch all lying down and mercifully not being fouled by my opponent). They've saved 170K so I can get the big guy if I want, or inject some speed with a catcher (10K more and I probably would have bought them both for a speed injection although my +AG lineman makes me think their ball carrying roll might be redundant).

As Norse are supposedly a bash team (seriously, ogres kicked my ass too), I feel like I should get him. The team is fairly undeveloped along with my wannabe elf, I have a lineman with Guard, a blitzer with MB and a Norse Werewolf (what a f**king ridiculous name) with Block.

Let's hear some pros and cons :D

Get yourself a 2nd Ulf + a lineman. You won't get far with a 11man team + a troll. The troll is basicly the equilent of half a lineman on the field when you're undermanned and two linemen when you're players up. The snowtroll is also almost useless until he gets MB, so get the full squad first.

I frequently run a 15-16 man team with norse.. One way to mitigate the casualties is zerosum some of your opponents players out of the game with DP fouls and then getting your replacement players off the bench at halftime.. More often than not your opponent won't have a 15 man squad and even if you rolled poorly the dp'ing alone should give you advantage.

Your team's only real strenghts are crowding with ulfs and MB/PO berzerks. The MB/PO zerks are necessary, cause smart players won't let you crowd. A lot of players will let you crowdsurf though, that alone should win you 20-30% of your games.

I agree with Carnis. Yhetees are funny (well..not ha ha funny  ) but the blitzers and wolves have more killy power. With 2 St 4 players and a smattering of guard, you'll find it a lot easier to keep your players on their feet.

I do not play Norse currently.

How effective do you all think the Claw is on the SnoT (+ M-Blow as a first skill, naturally)?

Re-read my original post and saw that it wasn't too clear. I have two Ulfs already, one with Block. Here's the full roster. Also it's a perpetual league in case that makes a difference to anyone's answer.

2 Norse Werewolf Block
3 Norse Werewolf
4 Blitzer
5 Blitzer Mighty Blow
6 Lineman
7 Lineman
8 Lineman +1 Ag
9 Lineman Guard
10 Lineman
11 Lineman
12 Lineman

3 Rerolls
Apothecary
FF 2
170K

The linemen really are dull without doubles. A couple with Tackle, a couple with Dirty Player, one with Kick, fend on all of them and that's about all they need. I'm not much of a fouler but probably need to change that so maybe the dirty player route with this team is the way I'll go. So what to get?

1. Thrower + Runner
2. Runner + Lineman
3. Runner only and get another after the next game
4. Snow Troll

Given what you have, I'd either take the Snow Troll or a Thrower and a Runner, and my first instinct would be the Snow Troll.

Warning: Snow Trolls suck until they get Mighty Blow. Then they're killing machines.

Snow troll is less squishy and can dish out more of a beating. You already have a ball carrier so take the troll ;)

I'd still take lineman + runner first, then the snowtroll. If you got time to play up your ST though, then take it instantly.. Perpetual means it doesn't really matter at all which way you go.

I love the snow troll. I do not think they are worthless prior to mighty blow (but it certainly helps).

One factor: dedicated carriers on AG3 teams are massively overrated. You should be giving your carries to the guys who need the points.

Not sure I follow you. Are you say not to give Sure Hands to a player or that you should be doing a lot of hand offs?

The latter. A retriever can be a good thing, because if you have a dedicated retriever you have an easier time building downfield cages, and advancing the ball with other guys; besides, the retriever will move your ball-handling failures mostly into your structures.

@ Wang: this is actually an argument in favor of the Norse Thrower, even if I'd take the Snow Troll first. My Thrower has been awesome as a retriever, with Sure Hands and Accurate (though a lino with Sure Hands and KOR would work, just not as well: even with a Thrower, SH is a good #2 skill on a Fend lineman, particularly if you run such a player in a strong backfield spot). What I've found about the Norse is that they build really sweet cages and hedges, but they always have to threaten a 4-turn TD, or any drive can suddenly get away from them and turn into a horror show when AV7 suddenly comes home to roost. Like elves and Skaven, scoring saves lives... for Norse, it's only sometimes true, but that doesn't let you off the hook. Fortunately, you can dump the ball off on all but one guy, so engineering improvements and maintaining downfield threats are comparatively easy given how much of a running team this is.

I decided to get the big guy. It might not pay off in the short term but I'm trying to get used to different playing styles etc. Also, like Carnis said, it's perpetual so it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the ideas. I like the idea of developing a ball retriever so may get a thrower sometime soon. I feel the role might be wasted on the +AG guy.

I'd get Pro next on that guy, unless he rolls a double or a stat increase: on doubles I'd take Dodge unless I got +MA or +ST. But for an AG4/Block player, Pro is a very solid G skill.

Since you had 11 already and had two ulfs I think you made the right choice. From here I think you might want to focus on adding another lineman and re-roll. I'd avoid adding positionals until you've skilled up the ones you have more.

Also Norse aren't a slog out type of team, you won't win in a ruck with that armor. Once everyone else has block it's all about having frenzy and cheap lineman that are relatively fast and agile.

I find good Norse play is less a head on collision and more of a sideswipe.
