110 resurrection Halflings skill choices

Post by Angeblich »

Hi all,

I am attending the BembelBowl here in Frankfurt, Germany on the weekend (which is my first tourney ever! Last year the salmonellas got me. Damn that Nurgle-Coach who prayed for them!).

It is 110 TV, no star players or other inducements, except for the halfling chef.

So there are not many options, really, just 14 Flings, 2 Trees, 1 Chef and then a collection of Apo, Fans, etc.

But here to my question:
You can chose 2 normal skills and 1 double (or another normal) before the first game, 3 more normal skills before the 4th (of 6 overall).

I was thinking about taking Block (Tree) and 2 Sure Feet (Flings), then 3 Diving Tackle (Flings).

1. question:
Is that a valid approach?

2. question:
How would you distribute the skills over time? Would you go for the more offensive ones before the 4th game, because then you will be paired against the not-so-good teams and maybe can shine a bit? Since I expect probaly a record of 1-5, I might take the first 3 games to just minimalize TDs against me and then try to win 1 or 2 games the second day, when I get paired with the weaker teams.

(I hope not too many of my opponents will read this... 8) )

You may want to consider Break Tackle on the other Tree.

Is Pro a valid doubles skill for a Tree in a tournament? It helps avoid Take Root and helps with everything a Tree might do (blocking, going-for-it, chucking a 'Fling, etc.).

Break Tackle on one Tree. Either Block /Jump Up / Sure Feet on the other. Halflings either get Catch / Sprint / Sure Feet to help the TTM, or Diving Tackle to be annoying.

But Halflings without Star Player are really bad.

Not a Halfling-friendly format.

What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

Grab is also a popular normal skill choice on Trees.

I have taken pro on the trees before and loved it. I also agree that this is a very unfriendly format for halflings.

I would choose Pro before block, Pro can help with everything. I normally take Pro on both treeman in tournaments, and the number of times if saved me compared to the number of times Block would save me is noticeable. For halflings I usually take Side Step, just to keep them alive longer. Hopefully you won't face too many Dwarves, I always get stuck playing two or three every time I play Halflings.

Well I went with Block, Break Tackle on the trees and sure feet on one halfling for the first day, then Catch and 2* Sidestep for the second day (changed original plan after talking to some experienced coaches after the first day, so I was kinda overskilled on the TTM-axis, but used Sure Feet to go further back with the ball-taker).

First game was a 1-9 loss against Woodelves (Tackle and Strip Ball on the Wardancers), who rolled 2* Blitz and 2* Perfect Defense in the first half (1-6 score 1st half).

From then on I think I did quite well, at least better than in my league (and without Inducements apart from the Chef).

4 games at 1-2 each against Liz, Chaos, Norse and Orc (he killed both treemen...) and finally a 3-0 win against orc (even did a defense-Side Step-TD after the opposing coach reminded me of my Side Step...).

For the next tournament in the same format I would just swap the sure feet with catch for the first day and go 3* Side Step for the second day or maybe one Sure Hands so I reduce the chance for failure in the 1-turn-TD further.

I loved the Break Tackle since I used it mainly for Blitzing once my opponents tried to adjust for this tree to be the TTM-one. Also when I realized that 1 Tackle-Zone is no problem because of the strong arm, I did not use Break Tackle for TTM that much anymore. Maybe I would swap Break Tackle for Juggernaut or such.

I am not too sure about Pro since I have enough Rerolls already and since the Ball-handling Halflings have their own Reroll-skills, Pro would go on the 2nd tree, where a Team-Reroll could be used. At least for a TTM-heavy playing-style I can't really see it, but then again I am not that experienced.
