Game analysis

Post by sann0638 »

OK, here's an idea. There have been various threads about tactics in a theoretical setting. I'm proposing to offer up a few games that I have played on pbem, with specific tactical situations in them.

In order to view the games, all you need is to download this file:
http://midgardbb.com/PBeMTool/pbembb_to ... on_001.zip and unzip it. Once it is unzipped open the file called pbembb_pbbl10e, and click on Load a Saved Game, and choose the file for the game. The only thing you then need to navigate is the Blood Bowl log control, which allows you to skip through the game by turn or by move. You hover over the players to see who is who, skills etc - all very intuitive. Current MBBL players - note that this is an old file as these are old games.

There are literally thousands of games on MBBL, but I've put some of my own game files on my own website to make it easier to find them.

Game 1 - Dwarves v Skaven File here (right-click then save as).

Dwarves receive, 6 turn grind which goes slightly wrong (hence not 8 turns). Leaves Skaven 3 turns to score. On the upside, the rats only have 6 players against the dwarf 10 players. Apart from noticing that the skaven set up illegally  , what should the dwarven player have done differently at this stage.

Game 2 - Ogres v Norse File here (right-click then save as).

The second half is an example of what I talk about in my ogre guide, hugging the sidelines with snotlings and ogres. Thoughts welcome.

Game 3 - Ogres v Elves File here (right-click then save as).

And then a bit of fun - my ogres beating Valen's elves 5-4, with my AG5 snot playing a large part! Mostly for fun, but it also demonstrates that you can set up to defeat the TTM by setting up in the backfield, and if you don't then it makes life a bit easy for the little guys. Sorry Gav!

Game 4 - Dwarves v Goblins File here (right-click then save as).

A quick demo of why goblins should not play dwarves. 6-0, 7-0 in casualties. Ouch. Could the goblin player have done anything to prevent the carnage?

While I am too busy to download and view these at the moment, I like this idea a lot as it will let us take advantage of some of the great resources out there.

It's only a suggestion, but how about a whole new forum (or sub-forum of the tactics one) stickied links to pbem tools, fumbbl (may be not as it's LRB4) and stuntyleeg tools, and any others that are free to download? Then people can start individual threads for view and analysis.

Thank you for those words of wisdom Master Wang.

Platform issues.

Ugh. Normally I'm pretty good at not letting tech push me around, but that ain't happening.

@master wang:

the new client on fumbbl requires no install, is free, and is lrb 6.

and comes with a replay system built in.

Hi nazgob,
is there analysis of individual games on the fumbbl forums? The technology on fumbbl has defeated me a bit.

occasionally, but usually not, simply due to the sheer number of games.

replay works best with the lrb6 games, as for the lrb4, you have to install a client.

basically, click on the link below and then click on replay. after that its fairly self explanatory, and you can watch as my thralls died in their hundreds.

That looks cool, but can't get it to work. I can get to a blank board. Do you click on the arrows?

FUMBBL's older LRB 6 replays are broken because the game database often gets purged when a new version of the client is released. The newer replays should work for now, and this problem shouldn't be an issue once the client gets out of beta.

Great stuff. Might tempt me into playing Fumbbl! It would be great if you could come up with a game that has an interesting tactical slant - maybe this one does, haven't checked it out yet :D

To get the MBBL stuff to work, you've got to take away the .txt from the file before loading the game.

Unfortunately, I haven't played many games with the new client so I can't recommend any of my own and I haven't really watched the games played by other coaches either. I could recommend some of my LRB 4 games, but that would require downloading a separate program for viewing the replays, not to mention that the different rule set has an impact on the strategies. Mind you, I'm sure that once the new client becomes the official client at FUMBBL, there will be tons of great games to replay and spectate.

Couldn't open it.

I did watch the posted Chaos vs. CP game, yeah. It's further cemented my view that the game implies a series of unstated techniques, patterns of action, that veteran coaches pick up either without ever knowing what it is they're learning, or at least without a vocabulary to put these conventions together and interrelate them to one another.
