ogre's Vs AG teams

Post by fire olli »

Hi All,

Out of all the stunty teams the ogre's has to the one i like to play the most. There seems to be one major downfall that i just cannot seem to master.

AG teams just seem to walk through the snotlings as if they aren't there. This becomes a major problem if its a snot that has the ball in a snotling cage. I know that a snotling cage isnot the best but sometimes it has to be down if you get a couple of boneheads.

Does anyone have any tactics to help with this.

Take diving tackle on snots (at least 2-4 of them). Other than that you need to force as many die rolls as possible even if they have no modifier and you should probably carry the ball with an ogre so you just need a snot or two to break up assists and don't need to cage in the same way.

Hand off to an ogre, or dont play ogres vs elves.

Regardless, you will always be the underdog.. by a huge margin too.

Yeah, I wouldn't normally recommend it, but against elves then an ogre ball-carrier is the way forward. DT absolutely a must.

The plan is to give the snots DT.
Its a 1,000,000gp league to start so i have gone with 9 snots, 4 ogre, 3 rerolls and an apo.
I have had a couple of warm up games and running with the snots has worked, i have never used a ogre to run the ball as i feel it might never get to the endzone :o i will give it ago in the next game.

Play against some bash teams first, skill up an ogre, give him break tackle, bob's your uncle. Sort of :D

As sann0638 says once your ogre has break tackle it makes things much easier. Juggernaut or grab are great as well on the ball carrier as they counter side step and stand firm which can be necessary as break tackle only allows you one dodge and a side step or stand firm player at a bad spot can force you to do two dodges if you don't get him down with the blitz. And obviously sure hands is blessed as it greatly increases your chances of picking up the ball and it negates strip ball - even giving the ball to an ogre is useless if he doesn't have sure hands and you play against elves with strip ball. I'd advise taking sure hands instead of block on your first doubles on an ogre, it might not be enough to win against elves but at least you'll have a better ball protection and you won't lose 6-0. After all you're playing ogres, not taking a severe beating against elves is already quite good in itself!

But whatever you do, with MA5 and bone head it will always take you forever to run the ball with an ogre, scoring in five turns is already pretty good and four turns or less is really against the odds. If the opponent has Kick (as elves do) it might take you the full eight turns to score unless you pick-up the ball with a snotling and then do a hand-off to an ogre but then this would defeat the purpose of having an ogre with sure hands...

By the way if you ever get in a position where you can stall and an ogre is carrying the ball, waiting until turn 8 to score can be quite dangerous - by this time you usually don't have any rerolls left so when by some miracle you happen to dominate the drive and then you don't score due to a failed bonehead on turn 8 I can tell you it really sucks...On the other hand if you score on turn 7 then the opponent has two turns to score, which is definitely doable with elves VS ogres. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, the joys of playing ogres...

I had a MA6 ST7 Block ogre to hand off the ball to... That will deter all but the most determined strip ballists.

Still, they will often cheat you the ball even with a -3die block, at least if they have wrestle to bring you down on the bothdown (125/216, without even needing a RR).

So if your oppo brought strip ball your only option is to isolate that guy and if possible MB/PO blitz + foul him till he dies.
