Making a Decision...

Post by Skarsnikk »

We're about to kick off our local league again and it's getting close to the time that i need to decide on which race to play, once again, I cant decide
I'm trying to choose between Undead (Vanilla flavoured) and Orcs, similar in style I know, but I've ran other teams with success these are whats calling out to me at the moment. I've ran Orcs before and have taken them to a few tournies, but to be honest the less said about the tournies the better!

As for my opponente I know I'll be up against High Elves, Slaan, 2 bash heavy Lizard teams (6 saurus & Krox to start), 2 Human teams and possibly Chaos Dwarves & Dwarves but the last two aren't confirmed.

So if it was your choice which would you pick Orcs or Undead?

p.s. pleae dont say pick which models I prefer as I've converted both teams from scratch so I like em both :P

Orcs. Play them a way you haven't played them before.

See, I could get behind this...

every Orc team I see is 4 blitzers, 4 BOB, a Troll and two Throwers to start. I'm happy to knock a player out just to see a stupid Linemen.

Do the no-BOB Orc team, cause its cool....

Or field two Goblins on defense: 4x BOB, 4x Blitzer, 2x Goblin, 1x Lineman, 3x TRR, Apothecary

Or, for a non-BOBby roster: 4x Blitzer, 2x Goblin, 2x Thrower, 1x Troll, 2x Lineman, 3x TRR, Apothecary, 20k Treasury.

Or, for a compromise: 2x BOB, 4x Blitzer, 2x Goblin, 2x Thrower, 1x Troll, 3x TRR, 10k Treasury.

Strangely enough my Orc roster usually starts like this:
4 x Blitzer, 4 x BOB, 2 x Thrower, 2 x Lineman & 2RR

Occasionaly I swap out a Lineman for a Apoth and I very rarely bother taking a Troll in the league as I dont like the risk, saying that though I do pass the ball a lot and rarely cage up, which is probably why I dont fare so well at tournaments, well that and an inability to break armour with a bash designed team!

As boring as it sounds I might go for the 4 x Blitzer, 4 x BOB, 1 x Thrower, 1 x Lineman, 1 x Troll & 2RR aproach and see if I can play 'properly'.

Orc. If you having issues with your skill as a coach I think taking orcs should make it easier to get better as a player. Orc are pretty forgiving and easy.

Have a look for 2-1 winning witha bash side and general Orc guides mate.

Undead might suite and are not too tough, but playing Orc to get better at the game is a great idea

Well thats the sticking point, I use Orcs wrong (or perhaps differently) but still win, which probably says a lot about my local league

Orcs are a premier bash team, but that's not the end of it. You can have bashy-passy Orcs or bashy-tricksy Orcs, or just bashy Orcs, and they all work. You can even go for a horizontal/west-coasty game like slower, tougher Humans/Zons/DE, but it's sort of a Tier 1.5 option.

Oh, and that starting lineup you've got (with the two Throwers) isn't bad, particularly if you're entering an established league and will be able to induce Extra Training, a merc Troll, and/or Ripper. I'd take an Apoth over a twelfth man, but maybe that's just me. 2x TRR isn't really enough, but with two Throwers and 4x Block it's pretty close. The ability to avoid going man-down with the reserve or Apoth is probably a bigger deal, actually. Orcs need their numbers.

Crazy orc style:

4 blitzers
4 black orcs
2 throwers
4 goblins
1 Troll
1 Orc line called 'Token'

The Scrumpers (Wood Elf)
Gitmo (Chaos Dwarves)
Sheik Ya Bouti (Khemri)
Fast and Furry (Skaven)
The Disposables (Halflings)

I do that with just 2 Goblins and no Line-Orcs, all the time. Works great. A lean, mean 1.2MGC peak value before FF and improvements.

I build Goblins for defense. Diving Tackle, Side Step, Sure Feet. I don't like buying Catch on AG3 players, preferring instead to take enough TRRs and throw into relatively secure spots. Maybe on Gob #2.

If I took 3 or more Goblins, I'd certainly take Diving Catch on one. Maybe as a first skill for #2.
