Goblins at Chaos Cup

So I've decided to bring back the Wonkaville Wonderboys, my beloved Goblin gang, in an attempt to defend my 2011 Stunty Cup at Chaos Cup next week. We also need to do well enough to defeat Both Down in the Three Die Block vs. Both Down Throw Down at that very same Chaos Cup! The format is 1.1 million, you must buy skills, no more than two of a skill on your team and no +ST or +AG. I hope I have that right. :)

Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140) (280k)
Fanatic - Mighty Blow (70k + 20k = 90k) (370k)
Bomber - Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (440k)
Looney (40k) (480k)
Pogoer (70k) (550k)
Goblin - Dirty Player (40k + 30k = 70k) (620k)
Goblin (40k) (660k)
Goblin (40k) (700k)
Goblin (40k) (740k)
Goblin (40k) (780k)
Goblin (40k) (820k)
Goblin (40k) (860k)
4 RRs (60k x 4 = 240k) (1.1 million)

I'd love Ripper and Bribes but I can't find the money. The last 30k went to the Dirty Player, which I thought was the next best thing to a Bribe.

Thoughts?

Though now that I look at it in print, i see a problem. I play a drive with 11, leaving the Bomber and a Goblin on the bench. Say I score on turn 7 or 8. Great right? Sure, but the Fanatic and Looney get ejected and then I HAVE to bring in both the bench guys, including the Bomber. He gets one turn and is ejected.

I hate to do it but I think I have to drop a reroll for a Goblin and a regular skill somewhere, maybe Sure Feet on the Pogoer.

I REALLY with I had just 10k more to turn Dirty Player into an 8th Goblin! But if I drop Dirty Player and a RR, I can get TWO more Goblins!

1. Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
2. Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140) (280k)
3. Fanatic - Mighty Blow (70k + 20k = 90k) (370k)
4. Bomber - Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (440k)
5. Looney (40k) (480k)
6. Pogoer (70k) (550k)
7. Goblin (40k) (590k)
8. Goblin (40k) (630k)
9. Goblin (40k) (670k)
10. Goblin (40k) (710k)
11. Goblin (40k) (750k)
12. Goblin (40k) (790k)
13. Goblin (40k) (830k)
14. Goblin (40k) (870k)
15. Goblin (40k) (910k)
1 FF (10k) (920k)
3 RRs (60k x 3 = 180k) (1.1 million)

I like this much better! Plenty of Goblins to rush in and replace the cheating Secret Weapons and Foulers that get ejected! Don't fall down opponents, because here comes DA BOOT!!!

I wonder if I can win the Stunty Cup AND Dirty Deeds? :)

You can go further, and drop the 1FF and the Pogoer for 2 Gobbos, to take your roster to 16 if you want.

From your first effort:
Drop Block on one of the trolls - maybe go with Stand Firm, Guard, or Grab instead? Or Pile On?? :P Saves you 10k
Drop Dirty Player - saves you 30k
Drop the 4th reroll - saves you 60k
=> total saving of 100k, for 2 bribes.

Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
Troll - normal skill (110k + 20k = 130) (270k)
Fanatic - Mighty Blow (70k + 20k = 90k) (360k)
Bomber - Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (430k)
Looney (40k) (470k)
Pogoer (70k) (540k)
7 Goblins (280k) (820k)
3 RRs (60k x 3 = 180k)
2 bries (100k) == (1.1 million)

Or, keep the 4th reroll and get an 8th normal goblin instead.

Do you gain skills as the tournament progresses as well?

Smeborg and Sandwich - Thank you for the help! You guys are both right, the team needs a bit of rearranging. BTW, we do NOT get more skills after each round. However, we do get to add mutations to two unskilled Lineman for Round 6. Hello TWO HEADS!!! Though one Extra Arms may help with a TTM attempt.

I will be keeping the Block. I block with them every turn if I can and having them be so much more reliable has won me games. The team is so crazy as is, that just that little bit of insurance goes a long way!

I also got a terrific suggestion via PM about FUNGUS THE LOON! Though why is he the LOON when he is a Fanatic? :P Anyway, here is my current build...

1. Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
2. Troll - Block (110k + 30k = 140) (280k)
3. Fungus the Loon (80k) (360k) (First star I've ever played in a tourney! Woot!)
4. Bomber - Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (430k)
5. Looney (40k) (470k)
6. Pogoer (70k) (540k)
7. Goblin (40k) (580k)
8. Goblin (40k) (620k)
9. Goblin (40k) (660k)
10. Goblin (40k) (700k)
11. Goblin (40k) (740k)
12. Goblin (40k) (780k)
13. Goblin (40k) (820k)
14. Goblin (40k) (860k)
15. Goblin (40k) (900k)
3 RRs (60k x 3 = 180k) (1.1 million)

Which leaves me with 20K. Another skill! Though now of course, I'm STILL crying about it not being 10K more so I could give Sure Hands to the Pogoer. I'm considering Sure Feet on the Pogoer or dropping one Gobbo for Sure Hands on the Pogoer and Dirty Player on a Gobbo.

Thoughts?

5. Looney (40k) (470k)
6. Pogoer + Sure Hands (70k + 30k = 100k) (570k)
7. Goblin (40k) (610k)
8. Goblin (40k) (650k)
9. Goblin (40k) (690k)
10. Goblin (40k) (730k)
11. Goblin (40k) (770k)
12. Goblin (40k) (810k)
13. Goblin + Dirty Player (40k + 30k = 70k) (880k) (DP is Lucky #13 so it's easier to remember!)
14. Goblin (40k) (920k)
3 RRs (60k x 3 = 180k) (1.1 million)

I'm liking this one! Doubles skills galore and a pretty good Goblin team for 1.1 million. Better than I'd probably ever get in a league setting!

Can't wait to try out Fungus!

14. Goblin (40k) (880k)
15. Goblin (40k) (920k)

Had to go back to this build as 14 players was just too little. I was worried about kicking off, getting grinded for 8 turns and then having fungus and the Looney play a single turn before getting booted (I'll play the Bomber on Defense). Of course, against a slwo team, I may start all the Secrets but better to be safe, as safe as Goblins can be, wth 15 players. Plenty of little green gits to keep flooding the field (hopefully) faster than my opponents (or the ref) can send them off!

Fixed that for you....Drop a RR and add 1X Surehands(30K) to a Gobbo (as discussed elsewhere, no stripball option and a RR for the most important part of the turn, the pick up) AND Leader on a Gobbo (30K) to get your 3 back. At the start of the half remind your opponent you'll always use the leader first, Simple (just like me!!)

Thoughts?? (and yes, i know you like RR's more than me, however a 'Fling Chef cannot steal your leader!!)

Man, you just keep fixing every problem I have! Got time to meet with the United Nations, I hear they could use som ehelp in parts of the world. :)

Forgetting about Leader REALLY shows my lack of tournament savvy!

1. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
2. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (280k)
3. Fungus the Loon (80k) (360k)
4. Bomber + Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (430k)
5. Looney (40k) (470k)
6. Pogoer + Sure Feet (70k + 20k = 90k) (560k)
7. Goblin + Sure Hands (40k + 30K = 70k) (630k)
8. Goblin (40k) (670k)
9. Goblin + Leader (40k + 30K = 70k) (740k)
10. Goblin (40k) (780k)
11. Goblin (40k) (820k)
12. Goblin (40k) (860k)
13. Goblin (40k) (900k)
14. Goblin (40k) (940k)
15. Goblin (40k) (980k)
2 RRs (60k x2 = 120k) (1.1 million)

I moved Leader to #9 as it is my favorite number so I can remember to protect him. :) I still comtemplated moving Sure Hands to the Pogoer but picking up with Sure Hands and then handing to a 9-moving Pogoer (relatively) seems good, although it is an extra 3.

The thing I still wonder about is the Sure Feet. Would Side Step be better? Sure Feet gets the nod so far because reroll skills save team rerolls. :)

Id always go surefeet rather than sidestep on the pogo'er, it makes your opponent defend deeper as he/she knows you'll be making Gfi rolls even if you have no team RR's (that the theory anyhow) also sidestep only works when your hit, something you dont want to be happening to your pogo'er! Surefeet is a skill you can use every turn, even on that deep recovery when your bomber has HMP'ed it down pitch (far over the heads of the Zon's/Khemri/Dwarves, no interception remember) at the end of your last turn!

If fact unless you can stat increase him to Ag4 (which i know you cannot at Chaos cup) or afford to give him a double skill (block or wrestle, Im still not convinced these would be better even then) i think Surefeet is the best skill choice with Sprint as a not so close second *given the RR limit*

There are better goblin coaches out there (i could name them but i wont) who may disagree, and they of course would be right to, you have to fit a goblin team to your own individual style, Ive stolen ideas from other better coaches some have worked for me, some not!

Thats one of the joys of BB, one size doesnt always fit all.

Hope you enjoy the weekend, please feel free to post how rubbish my ideas where and how/why they didnt work for you!! but most of all have fun

If you wanted a real laugh, drop goblin #7 completely (sure hands? pah... 'oo needz da ball??) and hire your rostered fanatic. :P

True, you'd probably have no players left come the second or third drive... but playing as goblins, that's fairly normal anyway.

You know, I actually considered that back when I had a Dirty Player Goblin! Putting up a 5-7-7-5 line with MiBx3 (heck, x4 since I'd find the 20K somewhere!) would be hilarious!

But I had a Sure Hands Goblin in our local league and he was invaluable! Plus, I've never had one on a tournament team. So I think I'm going to try that out.

2x trolls - block = 280
Pogo - sure feet = 90
Fungus = 80
Bomb - hmp = 70
Looney = 40
Goblin - leader = 70
7x Goblin = 280
2x reroll = 120
1x bribe = 50

=1080 - enough for one more normal skill. if you foul at all with your looney I'd take sneaky git.

Gives you 11 players without secret weapon, and 1 bribe so you can keep (mostly) your HMP Bomb or Fungus for 2 drives.

Lessons learned from Chaos Cup 2012...at least lessons learned for how I play Goblins. These may not mean anything to anyone else. :)

1. DO NOT HIRE FUNGUS THE LOON! :P In THREE of my 6 games, his very first block was some combo of block/skull or skull/skull, which meant he immedaitely removed himself from the game. One of those games, he flat out turned a win into a loss. I had kicked to Norse and proceeded to turn them over, score on Turn 8 and reduce their team to 4 guys. Second half, I am receiving with a 1-0 lead and a full team vs 8 Norsemen. First Block - Fungus swings into the line, rolls only 2 dice and skulls out. Loner fails, turnover, he is removed and the Norse flood throiugh the gap - bashing Goblins, scoring, then doing it again to win 2-1. Now, I take FULL responsibility for hiring him in the first place and for blocking with him in that situation but I was so used to the rostered Fanatic, I just wanted to get a crack at that 7-AV with MiB and 4MV, considering I had the game on lockdown. Or so I thought. Then Fungus ruined it. :) I hate stars and they hate me! I'll be returning to the rostered Fanatic, either with MiB or Block depending on the tournament rules.

2. Two RRs plus Leader is NOT ENOUGH! First, I always needed 4 RRs so 3 plus Leader might work. Though Leader was iffy as he was constantly targetted, though I would always use his RR first so 3 + Leader is probably what I will do in the future. Losing both my RRs to the Halfling Chef hurt. :)

3. Take at least one Bribe. My team this time was sort of the "what if I rolled a bunch of doubles on my league Goblin team?" experiment. Could Goblins be made almost average by lots of doubles? Well, some were TERRIFIC (Block on the Trolls, HMP on the Bomber) while the Sure Hands Gob was only so-so. But even with 15 players, I found myself forced to bring in Secret Weapons at terrible times and lose them after a single turn. Plus, shame on me, CHEATING IS THE WHOLE POINT OF GOBLINS! Need at least one Bribe for the Secrets and Fouling.

So I failed in my quest to repeat as Stunty Cup champ at Chaos Cup and will be retiring the Goblins for a while. Next time, I think I'll go with this roster...

1. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
2. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (280k)
3. Fanatic (70k) (350k)
4. Bomber + Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (420k)
5. Looney (40k) (460k)
6. Goblin (40k) (500k)
7. Goblin (40k) (540k)
8. Goblin (40k) (580k)
9. Goblin (40K) (620k)
10. Goblin (40k) (660k)
11. Goblin (40k) (700k)
12. Goblin (40k) (740k)
13. Goblin (40k) (780k)
14. Goblin (40k) (820k)
Bribes (50k x2 = 100k) (920k)
3 RRs (60k x3 = 180k) (1.1 million)

The Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) strategy. I am calling myself stupid, not calling anyone else that. :) Well, myself and FUNGUS! *shakes fist angrily*

Second guessing this already, I think the 2 RRs + Leader was fine if I had not added another RR-draining risk (Fungus + Loner) to the team. I could drop a RR for Leader and bring the Pogoer back!

1. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (140k)
2. Troll + Block (110k + 30k = 140k) (280k)
3. Fanatic (70k) (350k)
4. Bomber + Hail Mary Pass (40k + 30k = 70k) (420k)
5. Looney (40k) (460k)
6. Pogoer (70k) (530k)
7. Goblin (40k) (570k)
8. Goblin (40k) (610k)
9. Goblin + Leader (40K + 30k = 70k) (680k)
10. Goblin (40k) (720k)
11. Goblin (40k) (760k)
12. Goblin (40k) (800k)
13. Goblin (40k) (840k)
14. Goblin (40k) (880k)
Bribes (50k x2 = 100k) (980k)
3 RRs (60k x2 = 120k) (1.1 million)
