How to play WEs against Guard cages?

That's about it. Maybe the question could be generalized to: "How to play with an AG team against a Guard team in defence?" Is the only defense to have Guard players yourself? (Or waiting for a mistake or fumble?)

Try to position players allways one step ahaed of his cage. So he can move only one step per turn. Get a leaping guard into his cage. Then leap in with wardancer and beat the hell outa him.

Best against guard-cages is to strike before the cage forms: use kick and place the ball deep into his half/corner. Then try getting the ball before the opponent or attack the ball handler when he retrieves the ball.

If the cage is formed try to get with a WD with strip ball into the cage and blitz the ball handler, reserve a TRR for the "2D-against you" block :) To get a push-back result shouldn't be impossible.

Without Kick or Strip Ball it will be tough, though. Pray for pitch invasion :)

I do both of the above just to add support. Key is to prevent the cage from forming in the first place. With WE speed you are at an advantage over slower AG teams like DE's.

get some blodge players behind the cage, he must block them and thus can't go forward. If he does he stretches his own cage into breaking

That's the best defence against any cageing team.

Stop the cage forming in the 1st place and they are in trouble - as the teams are often a one trick pony.

That's why kick is such an important skill for all flair teams.

If the cage forms then you have 2 strategies.

1) Stand Off. Drop back only allowing the cage to move forward 1 square per turn. Quite dull, but can be effective - especially if there are only a few turns left. Make sure you've got a sweeper.

2) Engage the cage. Much riskier play - and early in a game often not worth doing. Basically pin the players at the back of the cage, try to ensure that no one else can get into forming the cage and work your way loose. As a variation you can pin the Guard players instead - so that they can't form the next cage.

1/kick skill
2/try to annoy your opponent before the cage is done.
3/put players in front of the cage and
4/if you still have some rr for the turn and you can blitz 1 die the ball carrier=>Leap inside.

Although I already have one lineelf with Kick and both of my WDs have Strip Ball, and I also have a third +1 AG lineelf leaper, I wasn't able to develop someone with Guard. Our league is quite bashy, it's very common (for my opponents) for the ball handlers to have Sure Hands and to have 4 or more players with Guard. Sh*t!

But thanks a lot for advice, today I'm playing a mangling dwarf team to get into the semifinals, the TR difference is about 60. Wish me luck!

Yes, I think fireball would help. But since I played only 2 matches before the playoffs, and you know how the WE team is cost-expensive, I had no money to use. But nevertheless, as testified by Juggie, I managed to score a second TD in 2nd half when the dwarf was receiving (with 5 players on the pitch), and then to be receiving in the overtime where I managed the same. So this is how I got into semifinals, which I played yesterday against grinding orcs (TR diff. 37). And he let me bite dirt. I lost 2:0, had possession of the ball only for three turns out of 16. At least my FF rose.

On the long term: Multiple block is pretty good against a guard cage.
Many guard cages don't have guard in all 4 corners, but set up like this:

G_D
_X_
D_G

(D is a defender. G is a defender with Guard. X has the ball).

So, position lots of assist next to a guard, and cancel out the normal defender. Then leap into the cage and multiblock the guard defender and the ball carrier.
You can count all your assists from outside the box, and the guard player doesn't get to use his guard skill.
Neat?

:-? You can't Multiple Block across a diagonal. Otherwise it would be great. :D
