Call me a cheapscape but...

Post by gorath »

I really don't have the money to buy the BB boxed game, mainly because I want to collect a team different from those in the box. My friend and I are starting together, and he doesn't want to buy it either.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions:

On a block dice, what are the different faces? There are 5 possible outcomes on a six-sided dice.... which has a double possibility of coming up?

On a range ruler, what's the length difference between the ranges? I mean the length difference between quick pass and short pass, etc.?

Thanks,
Gorath

ok block dice have 5 different images, and one image appears twice.

on the sides you have:

Skull - Attacker Down.
Smaller Skull with a small explosion symbol next to it - Both Down.
Arrow - Push back.
Arrow - Push Back
Explosion symbol with an excalamation mark in the middle of it - Defender Stumbles.
Explosion Symbol - Defender Down.

on the dice, the push back result appears twice.

I would say the answer to all your problems is an in-depth study of the living rule book, and some practice matches.

Since the LRB is available for free all over the Internet, you don't need to spend moeny to cover the basics of the game.

My Bulls have the "Thin Skull" trait. After every block they make, roll a D6. On a 1+ they get ko-ed and stay in the ko-box for the rest of the game.

In my league, we eschew the official dice for regular ol' pip dice as follows:
1: Attacker down (beware the double snake eyes on a re-rolled block!)
2: Attacker and defender down (unless saved by block)
3/4: Push back
5: Push back and knocked over (unless saved by Dodge skill, then just pushed)
6: Pushed back and knocked over.

Our pitches are also half again as big as the official one, so we've adjusted the ranges rulers accordingly. There, you just have to do the math with whatever you find works best for you, pitchwise. We use pieces of felt for their ease in storing (rolling up), and their mildly realistic grasslike appearence.

You can download a printable LRB which, along with prodigious practice matches, seems to be the best, most fun way to get going. Good luck, and I hope Nuffle hates you as much as me!

I'm sure Jason would have come along sooner or later but he does put together some nice deals. Above you could pickup the templates and a board for £12 if you want to keep it cheap. In all honesty the money spent on a box set over ebay wouldn't be too bad between 2 people and you would get the orc and human teams too.

I picked up the board and all the counters/templates/dice over ebay at a fairly reasonable price.

Then I just bought the teams I wanted directly.

You can just draw/paint your own pitch and dugouts on heavy poster board, or foam-core, or artist's canvas board. Make them as more or less elaborate as you like:

D6's work fine for Block dice, or you can even paint your own dice

Whatever you do, just have fun with it!

I don't know what a "cheapscape" is, but since you asked, I'll gladly call you one.

You're a cheapscape. Is that when somebody plants trees on your property without great expense? Or perhaps it's a new RPG world, instead of like Planescape it's Cheapscape. Would that mean the supplements are inexpensive, or that the world itself has items for your characters at bargain basement prices?

Sorry couldn't resist. :P
