Some advice for tactics.

Post by Noctis »

Hiya, it's your friendly deaf lurker here :)

l know l haven't posted in a while, but l tend to sit back and read all the cool posts.

However l do have a question....

How do you guys learn your game plans (tactics) etc... l'm finding it really hard to remember things, l have some wonderful guys who try and show me some, but it goes through one ear out of the other, and l'm prone to repeating myself and l am very predictable in my games.

So any tips? A notebook or a picture.. etc ?

Thanks :)

I've seen this happening quite some times. Those experienced choaches do tell the newbies what would be the best action all of the time, trying to improve their game. While this might help on the short term, it will surely do more damage in the long run. The newbie can play his games without having to think about his tactic or the consequences of his actions.

Now back to your topic: Learning game plans (tactics). Of course, you'll have to play many games to really learn those things. But it can be a great help to watch a game between two experienced coaches and ask some questions during this event. Because our league consists of 3 coaches only, I'm playing 2 matches and watching 1 match every week. You can learn many tactics just by watching another coach, adapting his ideas and trying them in your next game.

Just play as many games as you can; nothing beats experience.

IMO, don't try to do too many things at once. Pick one team and stick with them for a while. Try out one strategy with them consistantly until are familiar enough with it that you don't have to thing too much to use it. Then move to the next strategy.

i got alot of tips from better/experienced players at the end of games usually, but i only remembered a few. it helps sure, but the best way i found is to play a game then look back and think "what did i do wrong?" wether you won or lost.

look at your mistakes made in the game, which resulted in a turnover, lost a touch down, gave your opponent an opportunity etc... and make sure you realise why those mistakes happened. helped me after a bit, and i learnt my teams strengths and weaknesses this way

also, the specilist games part of the games workshop site does have a downloadable tactics file for almost every race/team so try those, they can help alot if you remember the key points

I have beginners play as many one-off games as possible till they feel ready... I take on different teams/races to give them some exposure....

In addition, the French site (url anyone?) has a "playmaker" with some representative setups....

I occasionally graph plays on paper (one of our coaches actually keeps a running playbook....)
