My Newbish question for today: Stand Firm

I was playing a Necro game TT earlier this week and -- force of habit -- avoiding the sidelines by at least one square, even when it could have been VERY advantageous to exploit that space.

And then, 2nd half, Turn 6, I realize that Flesh Golems have Stand Firm. Doy!

So I'm just making 100% sure before my next game: Stand Firm guys will never ever ever ever ever be shoved off the pitch, right? Like, they just don't move? Ever?

Newbish Question II:

Can Stand Firm be "turned off" if I choose (like if I'm doing a chainpush and the FG is part of it)?

While I'm in here, can somebody remove the apostrophe from Newbies in this forum title? It doesn't need to be possessive, as there's nothing following it to be possessed; were it a possessive, it wouldn't belong to just one newbie in particular (I hope) and the apostrophe would come after the S.

Standfirm holds your FG on the pitch even if he stands next to the sideline an a normal player would get pushed out. Even chainpushes are impossible if a standfirm player is somewhere in the row of normally pushed players.

Whether you can turn on/off Stand firm, I'm not absolutely sure. The skill description states
may choose to never be pushed back
and
he may completely ignore 'push-back' and 'knock-down always gets him down in the square, where he stands
So the first part sounds like you can turn it off, the second part doesn't leave you a decision.

I always played it in 'always-on' mode but as I said, I'm not sure here. The Skills/Traits description clearly states, that you don't have to use a skill/trait unless it says so. The wording of Stand Firm got me really confused (esp. the second part) now that you pointed there ;)

The word "may" seems key here. "He completely ignores pushbacks" would be absolute. But I want to make sure, you know?

I always thought skills were optional, but Traits were mandatory.

LRB 4 page 34:

All skills may be used once per action unless stated otherwise.
Traits may be used an unlimited number of times per action
unless stated otherwise. For example, a Beastman with Two
Heads may add +1 to every Dodge roll he makes.

LRB 4 page 35:

A player with Frenzy must always follow...

Does Stand Firm not say, a player can never be pushed back?

& besides why would a player with 2 heads declare not to use the +1 to dodge? (If someone did they'd be a moron  , not implying you, I'm just saying in general.)

Well, I've always played traits were mandatory.

LRB 4 page 37:
Stand Firm (Strength Trait)
A player with this skill may choose to never be pushed back as the result of a block.

And to your second question:
Yes, you´d be a moron not to use 2 heads. :D

A player with Stand Firm is never ever pushed back - unless the coach wants him to.

Ok so is Frenzy, the only Skill/Traight that is mandatory?

If not please let me know so I can correct myself & my league.

Age old debate...

Imho only Bonehead, Wild Animal, Really Stupid, Bloodlust (or OFAB), Take Root, Frenzy and teh +1 to Inj part of Stunty are mandatory. Everything else can be turned off and on at will (imho, at least).

In teh vault, No Hands and Secret Weapon would be added to teh List.

So, it in fact CAN BE useful to have both sidestep and stand firm on a single player? Cooool (though pretty pricey!) ...
