Second Edition box set Compatible with LRB and New Edition?

I'm looking into giving Blood Bowl a try, but want to do it in as affordable a way if possible. I have the opportunity to pick up the 2nd Edition box set (1988) for pretty cheap. I want to make sure that the stuff I'm getting will be compatible with the new LRB rules.
How does what is included in the 2nd Ed. box set compare to the 3rd Ed. box set compare to the newest release of Blood Bowl? Can I buy the 2nd Ed. box set, download the LRB from Games Workshop and be all set to go or do I need more things? What will be missing that I might have to get a hold of to play?
Since I don't have a lot of money, I'd like to be able to make new teams without shelling out full price for the pewter miniatures. Does anyone know of any plastic miniatures that might be able to be modded for play? I saw in one of the forum posts something about "WFB Plastics." What are these and where can I purchase them?
Thank you!!!

The pitch is slightly wrong in dimensions (the squares are smaller [so passing longer] and the Endzone is only 1 square wide now) but it's perfectly usable (we used it in our last league). Templates etc are all fine though, and yeah, just download the LRB.

Agreed. You get plastic orcs & humans in the box which are OK to star with. Basically if playing for fun you can use any models to play with of any race just make the team up of these. Many people buy 40k / Fantasy Orc, Elf, Goblin, Dwarf Sprues etc and make there own conversions.
Pitches, Reference Cards, Tewmplates from 3rd edn I can help you with if you need. Pm me! Good Luck.

Also if you want the correct pitch size you can download one, which is what I did, since I also only own the 2nd ed.

Okay, so the board and most things will work well enough that I'm good to go.
What exactly are pitch templates? (Yes, I'm an UTTER newbie

)
Margaretthorn - You'll probably be hearing from me if I do manage to win the bid on the 2nd Ed.
I was looking into cheap alternatives for figures and I was wondering if anyone had tried using Mage Knight figures. I know they have a whole Orc faction that you might be able to do something with. I was curious if the sizes were close enough.
Thanks for all the responses!

pitch templates = throw in/ scatter / throw templates.
Mage knight figures are ok but bases are too big and are fidly to remove & re-stick!
Good luck though!

I've done a fair amount of modelling converting Hero Clix (minor mods to major work creating other supes, not BB figs). I find them very easy to work with. The big trick is to find some Plasti-Zap glue. It's by the same maker as Zap-A-Gap, but works on all the flexible plastics. Great stuff.
You can see some of the Clix mods here:

I'm just starting to think of what Mage Knight clix would make good BBers. Many 3 figure sets go for 99 cents on EBay, great way to build a team cheap if you find some appropriate figs.
As a bonus for getting the 2nd Ed box is you get the colour-coded base rings for the players!
