Fan Factor

Post by fishgeekted »

I do apologize if this has been discussed, but that is why I posted in the newbie's forum. Cuz im a newbie! :D

I have been tormenting myself over how much fan factor I should start out with, so I did some calculations. These Calculations are based on the 2002 handbook. I was only concerned with "The Gate" and the Match winnings table (MWT). I already realize that FF is important on the Kickoff Table, but is that the main reason people sink gold into it?

I compared Fan Factor scores to "The Gate" and how it affects the MWT on the TR 100-125 column. As an example, let us take two TR100 teams that have a combined Fan Factor of (lets shoot high) 18 (9 each) they would need to roll almost ALL SIXES to get a +5 (like 15 of them and a few mid-high rolls). Chances are they will roll (average 3) and get +2 for a majority of the games.

Most beginning teams have 2-4 FF, meaning that their gate averages for two teams playing, will almost always be in the 12k - 24k, which equals a very weak 0 or a "normal" +1 on the MWT TR100-125. Based on the law of averages, it would take 2 teams with a combined 14 FF to achieve a +2 on the MWT. Sure they "might" roll high and get a +4 (roll all sixes) or +3 (roll all fives).

So in my opinion, FF can help on the KickOff table, but it almost has no effect on the MWT or "the Gate".

So should I still invest into FF when team creating, but keep it small, like 2-3? Or should I go for the gusto and raise it to a nice 5-9? The kickoff table is pretty important after all.

Thanks for any input! :D

Is it for a short league [4-10 games] or a long league [>10 games] ? For a long league, I would personally go for >6 FF when starting out. What team do you play and what's your play style? Background: I play HE, with a mix of races in a league of 15. I try to avoid bashing games if possible, going for a passing game.

I figure since my line elfs are so expensive, I need all the help I can get with the cash side. Also, you can't buy FF during the league. So I try to play teams with high FF [7-9] at the start of the league to get my Apo, 12th elf etc.

Hi! Yes our league is small and short, around 8 teams.

I play with the skavens. I love to pass, dodge, weave, run the ball. I avoid brawls as much as possible. My style is typical rat stuff. i.e. cowardly but smart! At least I think its smart!

If you are only playing ~7 games with a team then FF is a marginal investment and I'd suspect that spending the money on an extra RR would be better.

Once you are over 10 games played then FF is all good and you should start as high as possible.

Double Skulls is right [nice website, BTW!].

If you're playing more than 1 leg, each leg being a complete roundrobin, then FF rules. If only 1 leg, then RR is better. My leagues always go for 2 legs, then we play a cup game [single elimination] then back to league next season. So FF for me, and start out with only 1 RR. But the HE always end up with 4 or more...
