What is it?

I know this may seem to be a dumb question, but what type of game is Blood Bowl? I've played Warhammer and Warhammer 40K, so I know those rules. But what I mean is it like normal football, you have to get so far in so many downs? Or is it like people hitting each other for the ball then throwing it or running with it? So I guess what I am asking is if this is like real football at all? Thanks for the feedback.

Blood Bowl is based on American Football. However, there are no downs and it is a game of 2 halves not quarters.

The jist is that one team kicks to the other and then its a mad scramble for the ball. Whoever gets it can run or pass the ball into the end zone for the score. However the opposing team will try to steal the ball by hitting their foes. Hitting can cause injuries or deaths.... so be careful out there!

Game play is turn based. Each Coach can use his players once each turn - there are 8 turns per half. Depending on the action chosen (move, block (hit), pass etc) a number of dice are rolled to determine the outcome. If a player fails the action chosen - eg doesn't pick up the ball, throws a pass which isn't caught or is knocked down by the opponent the Coach's turn ends. So strategy comes in here to ensure that you make the moves with the least chance of failure first.

As games progress, your players learn more about the game and earn experience which allows them to learn more skills thus making them better players. Each team makes some money from the gate which allows them to replace fallen comrades or buy a new player.

There are approx 16 official teams in the game. Each has its strengths and weaknesses - eg strong and slow (eg Dwarves), fast and weak (eg Skaven), weak and agile (eg Wood Elves) etc. So play to your own strengths!

A game should last about 2.5 hours but will take longer for newbies.

Its a great game - enjoy!

Very well explained Dave, but you missed on bit, that BB is essentially played by 22 trained psycopaths  .

For me, this is the best part.

Though BB is based on American football, it's really more like rugby than anything else, at least that's how I see it.

Put it this way Valen, in the last 8 games ive played my star blitzer has the following record:-

TD's - 0
COMP - 0
Kills - 0
SPP's - 0
players KO'd - 4(all were himself)
Failed GFI's - to many to count(taken himself out on TD line with the ball in hand at least 50% of the time)

I think i might put him down :pissed:

Ive only ever played against wood elves and the only thing i learnt in that game was that wood elves are VERY squishy! I put over half his team in the KO'd+DEAD box by turn 6 :D
Tashton said that Dark Elves are VERY nasty, but he did play against them with an Orc team. I take it you are a Dark Elf player?

Sorry SurfingSD,

We have seemed to come away from the subject slightly.

Basically this is a game not to be missed, it has brought me and my friends hours of enjoyment. Give it a go, and you will soon be addicted. :D

In my opinion, BB is the best game ever to come out of the GW studios. It's simple, elegant and quick, but with real tactical and strategic challenges despite it's simplicity.
