Talk Fantasy Football

Hi,
Im not certain if this is the correct place to post this request/...but I need a patient coach to literally walk me through all the stages of the Pbem system. Iv'e never played BB before, but everyone has to start somewhere!!
My aim (eventually ) is to join one of the Pbem leagues. Would it be an advantage to subscribe to either Msn,Icq, or Aim? to speed things up?

Not sure if PBEM is the best way to learn Blood Bowl. There are some BB coaches who have struggled to learn the PBEM tool... so being a newbie to both makes it doubly hard. It will also be difficult to communicate rules etc by email - its much better done face to face.

I know it may sound a bit odd but the best way to learn the basics would be to play against yourself using the Board and Humans and Orcs. If you can manage to play a half to get the idea of blocking and movement etc then that would be a good start.

I also would like to know how to play by e-mail, but I don't so I can't teach you, but I know that you have to learn the table game first, so that you can feel the game, it is a beautiful eye-catching tabletop game. The online part only!... Well that would be kind of awkard to me. You'll get hooked to the game if you play it real version first. Bt I just probably misread your post and you already know how to play the real table game. If not got to Games-Worshop. com, search for bloobowl, then go for the living rule book, its a pdf file, print it, read it and get something inorder to make a real game.

Try using skijunkies javabowl. It works really well standalone on one pc. You could either control both teams yourself, or get a friend round and play against each other. I take it you have downloaded the living rulebook from the games workshop site and read through the rules.

Agreed you will probably want to start with something like SkiJunkie's Java tool to learn the basics first.

However, nothing beats actually playing against another real coach face to face.

I personally feel that by using any of the tools you aren't truly learning Blood Bowl. Let me explain... when you play the board game for the first time, you are constantly looking at the rules to see how many TZ's are assisting the blocker, and then looking to see what you have to roll. And searching through the rules for this that or the other. By doing so you "learn" how likely you are to make that block, or dodge that you want to do, and how importnant TZ's are.

If you use the tool to learn, I think that since it does all the "rolls to beat" for you... you really don't learn the rules. The same with Passing, Interceptin, injuries... you don't get to "learn" that aspect of blood bowl. You take it for granted.

Agreed ... you really need to learn the rules before you play electronically so you know the odds, and what's about to happen.

Thanks for the responses, though I realize there is no easy way to learn the BB game other than play, I was hoping for someone to "at some stage", walk me through a Pbem game.

Dangerous Dave: Suggests I play with myself Using the basic Humans/Orcs teams to familiarize myself. This I will/am doing now.

Coach Barry: Suggests I download the LRB and read the rules, I have done this and Im trying to digest them now.

Grumbledook: Suggests I try using Ski Junkies Java Bowl on the PC, and asks if I have read the BB rule book. Im trying to digest the 2002 Rulebook now. I assume that this Java Bowl is a PC version of the BB game? Is it easily available to buy as agame? Grumbledook also mentioned the Sky Junkies "Java Tool", is this an add-on for the Java Bowl game?
After thought; Is it possible to play against yourself (training), using the Ronald Loker Tool?

SkiJunkie's Java tool is here and run off of the free Java software that can be downloaded on the net.

And yes you can play against yourself using Ronald Loker's PBeM tool. Download the most current version at:

Its free the instructions are on the page how to get ti all working. Its still in beta form and gets updated every so often, so there are some skills that don't work yet and a few bugs but on the whole its a very good representaton.

Thanks for the info grumbledook, and indeed all who responded. I have just finished my 1st reading of the rules, then I will be re-reading them, then practicing using the tabletop game then the Skijunkies software. I will probably start off with a human team to learn the basics, and I will be trying to see how many other coaches have coached human teams and any tips,tactics etc they may have, but thats for another forum I believe.

the thing is it's a little bugged, you should disable players shadows and be careful when you press start not to select the high elf every time you start a game. it's very fun for quick games, you can test all races, you don't need to get everything out of the box! but no big guys and some skills don't work. it also uses odd rules sometimes.
But you should try it! Actually, everybody should try it!!
